I have seen and heard bagpipes on various occasions. Tartan Day in South Carolina. The funeral of my beloved Aunt Glenda Jolly. A couple of parades. and scant other venues which found me in attendance.
They have a characteristic sound and are indigenous to the Scots in late history as far as I know.
They remain a part of the Scottish tradition.
I personally feel they are an acquired musical taste, as I began not liking the music but grew to appreciate it over time.
Today is Bagpipe Appreciation Day.
It is a July 27 annual event celebrating the ancient musical instrument.
It is said that bagpipes did not originate in Scotland, but have roots in Mesopotamia where they were played by shepherds for entertainment.
They have seen use during royal ceremonies, funerals, battles, parades, weddings, and pretty much ceremonial fetes far and wide.
So if you play or listen periodically good for you. I view the bagpipe as part of my maternal history and as such will always respect their presence in my life.
Happy Bagpipe Appreciation Day.

Yes, I have been known to eat my fair share of junk food over the years.
As much as I would like to project that image of the nutritional pillar staunch in the food groups and avoiding all 'empty calories' I'm afraid it's simply not me.
High in fats, sugars, salt, and calories the junk food genre began back in the 1950s and I remember getting a cheeseburger, fries, and chocolate shake for something like 80 cents.
Now when you go into MacDonalds you see some little idiot child supposedly there to help the customer standing obliviously.
Worse, in some locations the children of employees engage panhandling the customers while they're trying to eat.
Suffice it to say, I had my fill of all that long ago.
Today is National Junk Food Day. It is ostensibly a day when you may eat whatever floats your boat without fear of nutritional faux pas and therefore NO guilt !
But beware of the trap that easy fatty sweet salty calorie laden quick meals may place you within.
There are people with food addictions which surpass the worst drug addictions in their severity and impact upon the consumer.
Try to eat to live, not live to eat.
Happy National Junk Food Day !

I like a good hot dog every now and then. Something about a plump frank with just the right complement of condiments on a soft bun simply appeals to me.
I'll never forget the summer of 1977 while I was in Chicago on liberty from A School and made the mistake of ordering a hot dog with mayo.
You would think I had cursed the holy virgin Mary. I certainly never did it again !
Summer is that time when I encounter the most hot dogs ...
I ususally get four of them from the local What A Burger on Meeting Street. They have mustard, chili, and onions and I have been known to tear them out the frame.
July 19 brings us National Hot Dog Day, that day set aside for the consumption of hot dogs and their sides.
I believe the name originates with the germans who brought their food choices with them when they immigrated. Also the origins of National Hot Dog Day are unclear in the literature.
It is quite likely never enter into a hot dog eating contest like the stupendous Nathans fete held at Surf and Stillwell Avenues in Coney Island — that town singularly known for hot dogs and is IMHO the hot dog capital of the world. Coneys are a favorite of mine in particular.
I hope you'll take time to enjoy a dog and cold beverage this National Hot Dog Day !
