Bagpipe Appreciation Day 2023

bagpipes johnston tartan

I have seen and heard bagpipes on various occasions. Tartan Day in South Carolina. The funeral of my beloved Aunt Glenda Jolly. A couple of parades. and scant other venues which found me in attendance.

They have a characteristic sound and are indigenous to the Scots in late history as far as I know.

They remain a part of the Scottish tradition.

I personally feel they are an acquired musical taste, as I began not liking the music but grew to appreciate it over time.

Today is Bagpipe Appreciation Day.

It is a July 27 annual event celebrating the ancient musical instrument.

It is said that bagpipes did not originate in Scotland, but have roots in Mesopotamia where they were played by shepherds for entertainment.

They have seen use during royal ceremonies, funerals, battles, parades, weddings, and pretty much ceremonial fetes far and wide.

So if you play or listen periodically good for you. I view the bagpipe as part of my maternal history and as such will always respect their presence in my life.

Happy Bagpipe Appreciation Day.
