An ability to discern beauty, understanding, danger, and other aspects of the aural world around us is a primary function of living and the senses such as hearing are our first line of defense in what is both a beautiful and hazardous environment in which we cohabitate with everything else.
World Listening Day is held on July 18 annually under the auspices of World Listening Project which is a nonprofit devoted to understanding the world through listening and audio recordings.
The day is in honor of the birthday of one Raymond Murray Schafer (July 18, 1933 – August 14, 2021) a composer of Canadian extraction who was also an environmentalist and is known as the founder of acoustic ecology born on July 18, 1933.
He developed his "World Scoundscape Project" which was a 1970s delve into what eventualy became acoustic ecology.
From humble beginnings there are many who take it as a serious international endeavor.
