National Iced Tea Day 2026
    iced tea
When I was a child meals were always served with two beverages.

Lemonade
Iced Tea

It was at this point that I began cultivating what would become a life long attraction to iced tea both with my meals and as a refreshing drinking between meals.

I have been known to keep pitchers of iced tea ready to go in my fridge for those moments when I need a refreshing pick me up to shake off the various frustrations accumulated during the day.

National Iced Tea Day is one of those "unofficial" holidays celebrated annually on June 10th in honor of one of the world's most refreshing beverages to ever make it's way to a dinner table.

It first became popular at the 1904 St Louis World's Fair which is in June — the time of National Iced Tea Month.

I hope you can enjoy a swig every now and then like I do.

I like it sweet, unsweet, and brewed with various flavorings like fruit and mint.

Happy National Iced Tea Day to you !

Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes in 1973
Secretariat
I haven't been very big on the ponies in my lifetime. Closest I could was in California where my office manager would speak of "going to see the ponies" but I was never a horse racing buff or anything of a similar vein.

When I was in high school ...

Actually 9 days out of high school Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes, becoming the first horse in 25 years to win the Triple Crown. Oh yes, there was a hubbub among my familiars the likes of which I had never seen before.

Shucks. Some of my friends even exhibited anger towards me for my failure to exercise the requisite reverence when speaking of the animal and it's meaning to horse people and society in general.

The stallion named Big Red was born March 30, 1970 and died by euthanasia due to a debilitating hoof condition on October 4, 1989.

His performance gained him listings in the annals of racehorse history second only to Man o' War.

It's a shame for such a magnificent winning animal to succumb to a hoof problem in his passing.

National Best Friends Day 2026
    besties
I used to have a few "friends" and of those a couple or so I viewed as "best" friends.

Far be it from me to reject the friendship of another as I wiled away my social time in the presence of these clods until I heard a few sound recordings of some of them speaking harshly of me.

They were then surprised to find I no longer sought them out as company and were loud and persistent in their inquiries as to why.

I never revealed my issues. I stopped telling all I know as a function of adulthood. I prefer it as well.

So today we have National Best Friends Day.

It is an annual, unofficial holiday celebrated each June 8. It is a dedicated time to honor the closest friendships in your life, whether those are childhood bonds or newly made connections.

The origins of this day are in 1935 when the US Congress proposed a dedicated day to honor close friends. It's a little too oushie gooshie for my tastes thank you. June 8 was specifically chosen because the early summer weather in most parts of the country makes it ideal for outdoor celebrations.

So if you have true friends and among those ones you consider "best" today is your day. I have such relationships and I am headed to fetch a bottle of single malt scotch whiskey for the absolute best of my friends !

Happy National Best Friends Day

National Chocolate Ice Cream Day 2026
Chocolate ice cream scoop
Chocolate ice cream scoop
Since the Italians froze hot chocolate in 1692, chocolate ice cream has been a contender as favorite ice cream flavor among the people.

Today we observe National Chocolate Ice Cream Day.

We don't know who started it but are happy to mark the day for a taste of chocolate heaven.

I for one will choose chocolate ice cream over all other flavors.

I think it comes along with that chocoholism I have in general.

Happy National Chocolate Ice Cream Day.

National Trails Day 2026
National Trails Day 2026
I was once the prolific hiker. Up and down the river walk back and forth stopping to speak with the horse mounted city police and upon their horses which I encountered.

I was in great shape and felt very good.

Today is National Trails Day.

It is held under the auspices of the US Forest Service on the the first Saturday in June and is "fee free" day across the land.

The day was established by the American Hiking Society in 1993. It encourages us to explore outdoor spaces, participate in volunteer stewardship projects, and advocate for equitable trail access.

It's a lovely day to engage in a 50 some odd mile walk so get moving !

World Environment Day 2026
    Die UN Die

Every time I turn around there is another surreptitious United Nations holiday aimed at fostering their world domination and the advent of Agenda 2030.

I want the entire false notion of sustainability erased from those idiotic notions the populace wish to carry around the face of the Earth.

Today is World Environment Day another one of those days the United Nations uses to try and assume control of the world.

Boo United Nations.

Get the United States OUT of the United Nations.
Get the United Nations OUT of the United States.

National Cognac Day 2026
cognac snifters

Today we observe partaking of and savoring the classic spirit Cognac.

Cognac is a premium variety of brandy that is exclusively produced in the Cognac region of southwestern France. Protected by strict French law, true Cognac must be made from specific white grapes (primarily Ugni Blanc), double-distilled in copper pot stills, and aged in French oak barrels for at least two years.

While all Cognac is brandy, not all brandy is Cognac. Brandy is a broad term for any spirit distilled from fermented fruit juice (such as apples, pears, or cherries) and can be made anywhere in the world. Cognac is restricted to grapes grown in the legally defined Cognac region of France.

While there are no official age numbers on a standard Cognac label, the industry uses specific designations based on the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend.

V.S. (Very Special) / Three Star - Aged for a minimum of 2 years
V.S.O.P. (Very Superior Old Pale) / Reserve: Aged for a minimum of 4 years
XO (Extra Old) / Napoleon - Aged for a minimum of 10 years

Hating on World Bicycle Day 2026
    Surly Trail Bike
I've been eyeing various bicycles lately as an outlet and for exercise.

Today is World Bicycle Day.

They are contributory to the health by providing exercise and the environment because they don't require fuel and therefore are void of pollution in and of themselves. The day supposedly highlights the health and environmental benefits of cycling.

The day is "recognized" by the United Nations who simply want to use it to make you their minions. Too bad they're out to become your defacto rulers and kill you if you get in the way.

June 3 is globally celebrated as World Bicycle Day, which shouldn't be a United Nations recognized observance at all.

Live Long and prosper.

Death to the third world United Nations seeking to take everything and everybody over. The democratic leadership are part and parcel to Agenda 2030 and as such are complicit in the criminal activity which is The United Nations.

Get the US out of the UN.

National Leave the Office Early Day 2026
taking the day off early
Early in my career I was keen on getting off early. Getting paid and being off was that state of being I naturally pursued.

I'm happy to say well before the middle of my career I began to seek somewhere to go. Some place to be. I found myself wanting to be useful more so than being off.

Today is National Leave the Office Early Day. It is an unofficial holiday celebrated each June 2 under the auspices of productivity expert Laura Stack.

The day encourages professionals to manage their efficiency better, beat peak traffic, and take some well-deserved time off to prevent burnout.

Younger folks will find this far more appealing than older workaholics such as myself.

This is an unofficial observance so you are not automatically authorized home early. If you want to take part without getting into trouble with your boss ensure that the proper arrangements have been made aforehand.

Obtain permission. Make sure your manager know in advance that you plan to celebrate and offer to make up any missed hours.

Use it as an excuse to eliminate inefficient workflows so you can pack up on time without leaving tasks unfinished Plan a getaway and utilize the extra afternoon hours to run errands, hit happy hour, or enjoy outdoor activities so you can return the next day refreshed.

It's okay to leave the office early as long as it's approved by those who run the office.

National Say Something Nice Day 2026
    Jabba the Hut
National Say Something Nice Day is each June First.

It is dedicated to counteracting negativity and promoting civility through genuine, uplifting compliments.

The day began in 2006 under the auspices of Mayor Keith Summey of North Charleston, South Carolina.

It began to recognize the communication efforts and book Say Something Nice: Be a Lifter at Work by one Dr Mitch Carnell.

The day was backed by groups like the South Baptist Convention and the Charleston-Atlantic Presbytery

To mark the day make someone's morning by noting something positive about them.

Gee, for a fat girl you sure don't sweat much.
Send a heartfelt email, text, or letter to a friend or coworker showing appreciation for their hard work.

Share kind words or compliments on your social media channels to start a chain reaction of niceness

Various studies on positive communication show that genuinely praising and thanking others helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while boosting the emotional wellness of both the giver and the receiver.

National Smile Day 2026
National Smile Day 2026
Today is National Smile Day. It is observed each May 31st to celebrate the healthy smile and promote the importance of dental health.

The day was created by Illinois dentists and encourages people to spread positivity, boost their mental well-being, and kick off National Smile Month.

Smiling releases endorphins which are natural painkillers as well as and serotonin, which will immediately boost mood and reduce stress.

The act can lower your heart rate and boost your immune system.

A smile is a universal language that breaks down barriers and builds trust.

It can also make you look stupid and without inherent insight or knowledge if used inappropriately.

So — Share the Joy. Send a funny text, compliment a colleague, or make a conscious effort to smile at the people you pass.

Prioritize Oral Health. Schedule a cleaning or ensure you are brushing and flossing properly to keep your teeth in tip-top shape.

Finally, try not to appear stupid or foolish by smiling inappropriately.

Joan of Arc died on May 30, 1431
Joan of Arc burned as a heretic
Joan of Arc died on May 30, 1431, when she was burned at the stake in Rouen, France.

Captured by Burgundian forces and sold to the English, the 19-year-old was convicted of heresy by an English-backed tribunal, though her verdict was officially overturned decades later.

The English orchestrated a politically motivated heresy trial to invalidate the coronation of King Charles VII, whom Joan had helped crown.

She was accused of heresy, primarily for claiming her visions were divinely sent and for refusing to stop wearing men's military clothing.

She initially signed a confession to escape the fire but soon retracted it and resumed wearing male attire, which led to her immediate re-condemnation as an unrepentant heretic.

She died May 30, 1431 at the age of 19 years old at place du Vieux-Marché in Rouen, France from smoke inhalation and severe burns. It is said that her last words were continuously shouting the name "Jesus" through the flames and requesting a priest to hold a crucifix high for her to see. Since the English feared her followers would revere her bones, the executioners burned her body multiple times to ashes and had the remnants thrown into the River Seine.

In 1456, an inquisitorial court reinvestigated the charges at the request of her mother and Pope Callixtus III. The original verdict was overturned, and Joan was officially declared a martyr. Nearly five centuries later, the Roman Catholic Church canonized Joan of Arc as a saint on May 16, 1920.

National Senior Health and Fitness Day 2026
senior exercises
When I was young I was overweight. This abated after I became a young man and pursued fitness as a lifestyle. Now I have little body fat as the elderly codger I am now.

I attribute this to the medications I take for Metabolic Syndrome X, aka adult onset diabetes.

National Senior Health and Fitness Day is celebrated every year on the last Wednesday of May.

It is part of the Older Americans Month activities.

National Senior Health and Fitness Day is the largest health and wellness movement for seniors in the US.

It encourages the health benefits of fitness to a sector of the populace which may become lacking.

Happy National Senior Health and Fitness Day.

Harambe killed at Zoo in 2016
    Harambe the murdered gorilla
Harambe was a 17-year-old male western lowland gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo who was shot and killed on May 28, 2016.

These were the consequences after a three-year-old boy climbed a barrier and fell into his enclosure.

His tragic death sparked an intense global debate about zoo ethics and animal captivity.

On May 28, 2016, a young boy slipped past a barrier and fell roughly 15 feet into the moat surrounding the zoo's gorilla habitat.

Harambe approached the child and dragged him through the water. Fearing that the 450-pound gorilla could severely injure or kill the child, the zoo's Dangerous Animal Response Team shot and killed Harambe.

The boy survived with minor injuries.

Following his death, Harambe became one of the most widespread internet mentions ever. His memory spawned countless viral trends, ironic tributes, and internet campaigns. It makes you wonder if the animal's death was really required in the situation. His keeper at the zoo was inconsolable.

Better luck in the afterlife.
