I haven't been very big on the ponies in my lifetime. Closest I could was in California where my office manager would speak of "going to see the ponies" but I was never a horse racing buff or anything of a similar vein.
When I was in high school ...
Actually 9 days out of high school Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes, becoming the first horse in 25 years to win the Triple Crown. Oh yes, there was a hubbub among my familiars the likes of which I had never seen before.
Shucks. Some of my friends even exhibited anger towards me for my failure to exercise the requisite reverence when speaking of the animal and it's meaning to horse people and society in general.
The stallion named Big Red was born March 30, 1970 and died by euthanasia due to a debilitating hoof condition on October 4, 1989.
His performance gained him listings in the annals of racehorse history second only to Man o' War.
It's a shame for such a magnificent winning animal to succumb to a hoof problem in his passing.
