You know, sometimes a man can't see something good when it stands before him and belts out a song. Such was my first encounter with John Prine. He was someone I had never considered for his music and therein lay my mistake.
Becoming a late bloomer in the fandom of John Prine is one of those things I regret very much in my own life. John Edward Prine was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. He blended folk, blues, and country music into his own unique style.
The youngest of four sons, his brother Dave Prine taught him his first guitar chords.
Often times his music addressed social issues and marginalized lives, and were known for their poignant storytelling, wry humor, and rough vocals. Prine emerged from the Chicago folk scene in the 1970s, and his 1971 self-titled debut album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2014.
He won Grammys in 1992 and 2006.
John Prine was born October 10, 1946, Maywood, IL and died April 7, 2020 (at age 73) at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN.
His wife was one Fiona Whelan whom he married 1996–2020). He has two children, Tommy Prine, Jack Prine. Previously he was married to Ann Carole (1966–1982) and Rachel Peer (1984–1988).
When all is said and done I hope I get to meet John Prine in the hereafter and possibly bestow some of the honor I failed to give him in the living years.

Today I observe my maternal Scottish culture and heritage with National Tartan Day.
Tartan Day was founded in Nova Scotia as an annual celebration of Scottish culture and heritage and has grown more popular every year.
We have a local gathering called "Tartan Day South" which recently transpired at the end of March.
It's all very exciting to realize that there is a contingent of people with similar backgrounds as my own.
In the US, it was declared 'Tartan Day' by the Senate in 1998 to celebrate the outstanding achievements and contributions made by Scottish Americans to the United States.

- MLK Assassination

Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated on April 4, 1968, at 6:01 pm CST.
He was shot while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, and was pronounced dead shortly after at a local hospital.
He was 39 years old and in the process of supporting a sanitation workers' strike.
Dr King was in Memphis to lead a peaceful march and support the Poor People's Campaign.
James Earl Ray later pleaded guilty to the assassination.
However there was public dispute over the notion that Ray could have acted alone.
Thusly, one of the great icons of my youth. The racial strife was palpable for a long time.
Now we have a bunch of people who already believe they are owed anything and everything ... but they still want more and more.
A man with whom I had imagined conversing many times over the course of my childhood — was snuffed out over a petty political disagreement.
Truly a sad day for democracy, humanity, and the United States of America.

Buddy Ebsen was born 118 years ago April 2
Buddy Ebsen was an all time favorite actor of mine because he played Jed Clampett in The Beverly Hillbillies, a staple of my television watching childhood.
He was born April 2, 1908 in Beleville, IL. He was born Christian Ludolf Ebsen and was also known as Frank "Buddy" Ebsen.
He began as a dancer in a Broadway chorus during 1920s.
He later embarked on a vaudeville act with his sister Vilma Ebsen, which also appeared on Broadway.
He was even offered the role of Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz in 1939.
After agreeing to exchange roles with Ray Bolger to the Tin Man he fell ill to constituents of the aluminum makeup and was replaced by Jack Haley.
He also starred in Barnaby Jones around 1973 but this was not a program with any attraction for me personally.
Regardless, I have enjoyed his career and miss that kinder gentler past of which he was a part.
Buddy Ebsen passed July 6, 2003 from pneumonia at age 95.

Another April Fools Day is upon us — a day for pranks and hoaxes.
It is an international tradition dedicated to the absurd and involving the phrase "April Fool" on those poor victims of your jokes.
I'm less fond of the day than I was in an earlier time, probably due to the excessive exuberance of my cohorts and those pranks they would play on me.
During a younger day all of this is fine.
Now that I'm older I may kick your ass.
Happy April Fools Day numb nuts.

Today is yet another freak fest for people who think they may choose their gender.
Yes, another International Transgender Day of Visibility where men may think they're women and women may think they're men.
Biological concepts are discarded and genetics declared a sham by people who only believe in "feelings" and science may not enter the picture.
Its a day for celebrating men who think they may declare themselves female then trounce biological females into the ground with those Y chromosome performance benefits the real ladies don't have. It's a day for noting those sicko would-be females who are actually male and go around with high powered rifles shooting up elementary schools killing innocent children and faculty.
Be ashamed freaks. Though you have an inability to control yourselves there are a number of us with the ability to take control and fix the situation.
So the day is yours and I hope your incorrect irrelevant asses are happy.
There have been too many transgender females (frustrated males) who attack and kill innocent elementary school children to date.
Normal people of the world — which transgenders are NOT — simply do not behave in this reckless murderous manner.
Transgenders are leftist inspired libtard errors of humanity. While they remain visible you should get them in your sights.
Don't call me 'cis' stupid because I will likely tear you apart. I'm a real biological man and demand to be treated as such. Keep your errant ideology and your equally abhorrent code words to your stupid selves.

- Tablet vs Capsule

I have often debated the efficacy of tablet administration of substances compared to that of capsules.
Tableted substances consist of active ingredients and fillers pressed into solid, durable forms.
They are typically used in high-dosage or long-term medication for stability. They are typically cost-effective and allow for splitting doses. They are known to cause stomach irritation for some people.
Capsulated substances consist of active ingredients enclosed in a soluble shell, typically made from gelatin or vegetable-based substances.
They are designed for easy swallowing, quick dissolution, and to mask unpleasant tastes.
In the end I have always chosen the tablet as my preferred method of medicinal administration.
Something about the manufacture of the capsule and the dissolving of that capsule gelatin which impedes my perception of the uptake of that which is the "payload" containing the active ingredients I seek.
However, I have many respected dissenters out there and the bottom line is you choose the delivery method you prefer.
I will take a tablet over a capsule any day.
I prefer substances which dissolve entirely over a separate container which may have differing characteristics of dissolution.

I am not a veteran of the conflict in Viet Nam. I am a "Viet Nam era" veteran however.
Today is National Vietnam War Veterans Day held as the result of Vietnam War the Veterans Recognition Act of 2017.
It happens each year on March 29 to honor the 3 million+ Americans who served in the Vietnam War — as well as those who didn't make it back home afterward.
The day honors all who served between 1955 and 1975, especially those who were not welcomed home properly like my step father.
He was wounded in action arriving in casts for two broken collar bones ... and the so-called "hippies" in San Francisco threw rocks and trash at him as well as verbally insulting and abusing him as he was being escorted though the airport.
Why weren't they fired upon by armed guards?
The country never did anything about this egregious mistreatment either.
This day serves to give Vietnam veterans that gratitude and recognition they deserved upon their return instead of the gross mistreatment they received.
It was set into place by President Nixon in 1974 for March 29. It was officially established as an annual national observance by President Donald Trump in 2017.
Local communities and American Legion posts hold ceremonies, breakfasts, and the laying of wreaths such as at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC.
Sometimes there is absolutely no decorum in a free nation.

We have the observance of Earth Hour this day.
It is held annually since 2007 on the last Saturday of March.
This has it happening on March 28, 2026 at 8:30 pm.
Earth Hour is held under the auspices of the World Wildlife Fund and it's partners and arises from an international grassroots movement organized by the World Wildlife Fund.
It raises awareness about climate change and nature loss, and encourages a shift toward a more sustainable lifestyles.
Famous landmarks and homes worldwide turn off lights for one hour to create a symbolic moment of unity.
We are encouraged to use that 60 minutes of lights being turned off to engage in activities like reconnecting with nature, cooking sustainable meals, or cleaning up local areas.
It is meant to encourage the powering down of unnecessary electrical equipment and specifically non-essential electric lights.
They refer to this as "Give an hour for Earth" by spending 60 minutes doing something positive for the planet.
It is an international event marking it's 20th anniversary of the Earth Hour movement.

Back in my whiskey days I was a a tequila man mostly, but enjoyed gin and tonic as well as various vodka concoctions in my pursuit of altered consciousness.
Today is International Whiskey Day.
It is observed each March 27th yearly since 2012 under the auspices of renowned whiskey writer the late Michael Jackson, who died in 2007.
It celebrates of all manner of whisky (or "whiskey" if you prefer). This includes Scotch, Bourbon, Rye, Irish, Japanese and everything else.
It frequently involves toasting Michael Jackson in honor of the great whiskeys of the planet.
The day is mostly for appreciating the history, craft, and enjoyment of those spirits worldwide.
It further supports and raises fundage for charity. Particularly organizations related to Parkinson’s disease from which Michael Jackson suffered.
Many enthusiasts use this day to share and explore different bottles with friends, focusing on the diversity of the "water of life".
This day is different from World Whisky Day held on the third Saturday of May.
So get out there and grab yourself a snootful.
Happy International Whiskey Day to you who drink.
As for we teetotalers there is the opportunity to perhaps reminisce and admire from afar.

- National Spinach Day 2026

Spinach. That superfood which promotes health in so many nutritional ways it's amazing.
It is a veritable nutritional powerhouse rich in vitamins A, C, K, folate, as well as minerals, fiber, and antioxidants.
It supports bone health, vision, brain function, immunity, heart health, and lowers blood pressure. It aids digestion while helping manage blood sugar and weight due to its low calories and high nutrient density. Its compounds like lutein, nitrates, and alpha-lipoic acid protect cells, improve blood flow, and enhance insulin sensitivity.
When I was a child I watched Popeye the Sailor frequently seeing how Dad was in the Navy and all.
I knew all of the characters and could sing all of the songs along with them on the television. My favorite of all were the Spinach verses of the various Popeye theme songs and spinach has always held a special place in my heart.
There was a time when I consumed it several times a week and it was a time of enhanced health for me personally. Unfortunately, I have fallen short in my old age and do not give my nutritional intake the consideration it once had.
Regardless, today is National Spinach Day and I hope you will recognize it for the nutritional treasure it remains !

- Beverly Cleary passed this day in 2021

Beverly Cleary was my favorite childhood author.
I knew the characters from her books as though they were friends in my back yard.
Her favorite book of mine personally was entitled Ribsy which was about a dog and his adventures with Henry Huggins, his owner.
She was born Beverly Atlee Bunn April 12, 1916 and graduated from the University of Washington in 1939.
She then became a children's librarian in Yakima, Washington, until 1940, and then as the post librarian at the US Army Hospital on Camp John T Knight in Oakland, California from 1942 to 1945.
She also worked at Sather Gate Book Shop in Berkeley before becoming a full-time writer for children.
She passed this day in 2021 at the age of 104.
I will always remember her as a pillar of my childhood. Rest in peace.
Then there were the others associated with Ribsy and Henry Huggins:
Ramona Quimby - Younger sister who evolved from a preschooler to a thoughtful fourth grader.
Beezus Quimby - Ramona's older sister.
Henry Huggins - Boy whow owned Ribsy and lived on Klickitat Street where all the adventures transpired.
Ribsy - Henry's endearing, mutt.
Ellen Tebbits & Otis Spofford - Main characters of their own stories focused on elementary school life and friendship.
Socks - A tabby cat. Subject of the book Socks.
Beverly Cleary's characters explored ordinary, often humorous, family struggles and emotions with honesty.

- National Cocktail Day 2026

When I was in LA I consumed cocktails practically daily. It was a common thing with most of the populace going to some bar and having a couple after work.
This was the tail end of the dreaded 'disco era' and people also did a lot of dancing and prancing at these establishments as well ...
Far be it from me to buck convention. I was right on out there with a glass (or two or three) in my hand too.
When I stopped consuming alcohol my bar days ended abruptly. Whereas they were once central to my existence and social life I haven't missed them a single day since.
National Cocktail Day is celebrated annually on March 24th under the auspices of author Jace Shoemaker-Galloway since 2013.
It is meant to honor the artistry of mixed drinks and the professionals who craft them.
The day encourages trying new recipes, hosting parties, or visiting local bars to enjoy classic or modern cocktails.
For we who no longer consume alcohol, the day also encourages trying "mocktails" or virgin versions of popular drinks.
While National Cocktail Day is March 24th, note that World Cocktail Day is observed on May 13th.
