Raymond Burr born

Raymond Burr
One of my mother's most enduring favorite television characters was Perry Mason. He portrayed the trials of a master criminal defense attorney handling the most difficult cases in support of the innocent. Having little to do during these episodes of hers I would often times take them in myself. The noteworthy cast included:

Raymond BurrPerry Mason
Barbara HaleDella Street
William Hopper    Paul Drake
William TalmanHamilton Burger
Ray CollinsLt Tragg
Wesley LauLt Anderson

I was often intrigued by the intricacy of the plot lines and the complex performances required by the actors.

Raymond William Stacy Burr was born on May 21, 1917 at New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada and passed September 12, 1993 at Healdsburg, California. He was a Canadian actor who had a lengthy Hollywood film career and portrayed the title roles in the television dramas Perry Mason and Ironside.

Burr began acting roles on Broadway, radio, television, and film, usually as the villain.

He portrayed the suspected murderer in the Alfred Hitchcock thriller Rear Window in 1954. He also had a role in the 1956 film Godzilla, King of the Monsters! which he reprised in the 1985 film Godzilla 1985.

He won Emmy Awards for acting in 1959 and 1961 for the role of Perry Mason, which he played for nine seasons beginning in 1957 through 1966. He reprised in a series of 26 Perry Mason TV movies from 1985 through 1993.

His second TV series called Ironside, earned him six Emmy and two Golden Globe nominations.

Raymond Burr died allegedly from liver cancer in 1993 when his personal life came into question, as many details of his biography appeared to be unverifiable.

He was ranked number 44 of the 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time by TV Guide magazine in 1996.

His partner was a man named Robert Benevides and their relationship spanned the years from 1960 through 1993.
