Pause The World Day 2022
noise
Noise. Sound, especially ones that are loud or unpleasant — or ones that cause disturbance. A harsh discordant mixture of sounds.

Lots of things make noise in our world. So much so that we take measures to eliminate them on occasion. The daily din of racket around us can sometimes drive us to distraction.

Street noise. Traffic noise. Emergency vehicle noise. Industrial noise. That endless talking which turns into noise. Airport noise. Television noise. Radio Noise. Construction noise. gd spanish music noise.

My mama calls some of my most favorite music noise.

Constant or uncontrollable noise can stress us out and raise our blood pressure and heart rate causing the release of stress hormones such as cortisol.

This brings us to Pause the World Day. A day reserved to turn off all sources of noise in our lives as a matter of taking control and decompressing.

On this day, the world should be paused and our troubles should be forgotten.

Some of the recommended remedies are daily activities you might do otherwise.

Have a cup of your favorite hot beverage.

Take a walk in nature. Take a day off fron work. Eliminate that telephone interruption. Do the same with email and messages.

Then you have things like meditation and practicing yoga.

Exercise, get a massage, soak in a hot tub and so forth.

National IT Professionals Day 2022
    Dave the craniomonster
I took the road less traveled. My career path originally was medicine.

Plan B became computers. I suppose things worked out satisfactorily because I am comfortable in my old age and meet all my bills in retirement.

I have always been treated as a 'strange' human being in the work place.

The only reason they kept me around was to exploit my skill set which remains formidable here in my autumn years.

The ability to sit at a machine and handle any contingency has served me well over the years.

Today is National IT Professionals Day. It goes down on the third Tuesday of every September &mdash making it September 21 this year.

It is said to be a day to recognize the technical experts — network engineers, system administrators, analysts, database admins, programmers, scripting developers and all the other types of IT professionals those who provide that support required to maintain and operate a network properly.

I may be a geek but I don't really put much emphasis on National IT Professionals Day.

The field is over run with advanced degrees who cannot do anything. The stupid HR people who think the "qualified" have degrees are the problem. HR people are stupid so they are bound to hire the least suitable individuals to fill a position. The stupidest HR people populate two law firms on main street in Columbia, SC.

So I was an IT professional. I still have moments when my career lingers and hangs over me like a dark cloud. However, I can still do it. Hardware, software, media ... it's all in a days work. I haven't needed any support since 1973 but I haven't really loved my career at all — from then until now. When I started out there were no computer and networking training programs in my field.

It didn't faze me either.

Respect for the Aged Day 2022
the cycle of life
As I grow older I find there is less that I know and more that I don't. Contrast this with my youth when I thought I knew a lot about most things.

I even knew a young man who was said to know everything about absolutely everything ... thank you Robbie !

All joking aside, my youth found my less than appreciative of my elders and I have grown to regret this mistake over the years.

It's the single most lamentable aspect of my existence as I sit and pine for those gone on before.

All that is left are those vaporous winds of the old days call memory. To think I had so much more and did not realize it.

Today is Respect for the Aged Day. It is held the Third Monday in September.

In Japan it is a public holiday honoring elderly citizens.

It all began as Old Folks Day in 1947 in the Hyogo Prefecture of Japan.

In 1966 it became a national holiday in Japan and was held on every September 15.

Since 2003 it occupies the 3rd Monday of September.

It is popular in Japan because the people there have an inherent respect and appreciation for the experience of the elderly.

I am a late bloomer in that regard.

Chiropractic Founders Day 2022
When I was on the west coast I worked in a wholistic clinic where the entire person the aim of treatment not just a single disease process.

This was an interventional envioronment which was multidisciplinary utilizing people from many different backgrounds on the treatment team.
Dr Steve Foreman

I became friends with a chiropractor named Steven M Foreman and we would grab a bite of lunch or engage in various endeavors as well as after hours goings on with his wife and children. We took an overnighter to Lake Arrowhead and it started snowing at the upper elevations. Steve could slap a set of chains on his tires like nobody's business. It was amazing.

He had several children then including two young boys and a set of infant twins who were new additions. He had a young child named Ben that I could hold seated in the palm of my hand. At that point in my life I was running miles and exercising daily. I am no longer capable of such antics, I can assure you.

He was immersed in his profession and engaged into presenting research papers on things like hemipelvectomy in conjunction with one of his little smartass chiropractor friends because it was "his" patient — and writing books on the technical aspects of whiplash and other injuries.

Today was have Chiropractic Founders Day. Chiropractic was founded on September 18, 1895 hence the date ...

Chiropractic is a system of integrative medicine based on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of misalignments of the joints, especially those of the spinal column, which are held to cause other disorders by affecting the nerves, muscles, and organs.

The mechanism is characterized as nerve energies passing through the various nerves and is surprisingly similar to accupuncture.

A chiropractor is a practitioner of chiropractic and delivers health care based on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of misalignments of the joints.

Chiropractors are identified primarily by the school from which they graduated. My friend was a Life Graduate from Life University in Georgia where they teach chiropractic and other aspects of wholistic health. There are also Palmer Graduates who attend the Palmer school which was one of the first. The Pettibon System is said to be a spine and posture correction methodology which provides pain relief, restores normal spinal form and function involving the patient in exercise program designed to correct those faults introduced there during activities of daily living.

So as I said September 18, 1895 was the date Chiropractic was founded. The medical industrial complex almost immediately went on the attack with the AMA publically decrying chiropractors as an "unscientific cult".

My friend was at the forefront of bringing chiropractic into full respectability via what he referred to as the grassroots movement which recognized the value of manipulations. He was also the first person I heard use the title 'physician' in conjunction with chiropractors and he was a vocal advocate for the profession for as long as we were close.

I dare say that by his staunch and vigorous advocacy for the field he was a founder of respectability in the field of chiropractic.

I can personally attest to the improvement those adjustments he administered to me helped and I dare say that had I remained in California I likely would have continued them from then until now.

International Eat an Apple Day 2022
Eat an apple on going to bed and you'll keep the doctor from earning his bread.

Welsh aphorism from 1866

An apple a day keeps the doctor away

The same quote evolved and in print from 1913
Honey Crisp Apple

The third Saturday of September brings us International Eat An Apple Day in the name of encouraging us to have ourselves an apple for the taste and nutrition it brings.

Indigneous to the Tien Shan mountain range of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan central Asia the fruit has evolved from those times into that which we enjoy today.

The Silk Road trade routes connecting China and the Far East to the Middle East and Europe initiated the discovery of these wild apples and subsequently caused the fruit to spread through western Europe.

Subsequent imports to America by the European colonists took the apple to America.

The orchards typically began with few varieties and the numbers increased over time due to consumer demand.

I recall how as a child I loved to read about John Chapman aka Johnny Appleseed and his conservatorship of The Republic and his legacy of apple trees across the land.

This historical tradition and Americana contributed to the patriotism which grew within me from an early age.

My particular favorites of this fruit revolve around the Granny Smith and Honey Crisp varieties — and I prefer an organically grown apple if you please.

So eat an apple and keep your physician at bay.

National Collect Rocks Day 2022
rocks
A while back my mom went to Las Vegas with her late husband to visit his sister and their family.

She toured around places including the Vegas strip and Hoover dam and it was an eventful interlude she seemed to enjoy very much.

She brought home a number of lapidary stones in a velvet bag which I transferred to a covered glass bowl and set upon my desk at work.

It stayed there for a great many years prior to being dashed upon the floor by a clumsy visitor.

They now reside in a paper sack in a drawer in my closet.

Today is National Collect Rocks Day.

It is observed each September 16 and is a moment to observe and perhaps collect specimens of natural beauty.

My personal favorites are the crystalline minerals like quartz, citrine, and selenite but I also like the patterns presented by the agates and petrified wood has been a lifelong favorite.

So I really haven't taken the lapidary world by storm with my collection but I still think that rocks are pieces of natural history which are interesting to collect and view.

National Felt Hat Day 2022
    brown felt hat
This one is rather anachronistic. September 15th is National Felt Hat Day.

The observance recognizes a type of head gear that has been manufactured and worn throughout much of history.

Felt was one of those materials utilized in hats for the protection it offered and the durability of the material.

It is said that men and women wore hats for both protection and as status symbols ... but that status symbol thing is lost upon me.

With the changing of the seasons hat wearers would trade their lighter, cooler straw hats for the warmer felt hat.

It is further stated that etiquette dictated which kind of hat was appropriate for the various venus people attended and that a part of good behavior was learning how and when to both don or doff their headgear.

Felt is usually produced from wool but may be derived from the fur of other animals such as rabbit or beaver.

The misfortune of these animals were diminished populations as the popularity of their fur for hats rose.

I have not been one to ever wear a hat. A rationale for this did not really exist; I simply shunned them as a personal preference.

Then there was my navy enlistment where a hat was part of the uniform and therefore required with it's own set of rules that applied.
Since the end of my enlistment I occasionally wear a boonie hat out in the sun riding my lawn tractor but that's about it.

National Coloring Day 2022
Frog Coloring Page
Today is National Coloring Day. When I was a child I enjoyed coloring books and crayons.

By the time markers came around I was somewhat older and less inclined to do any coloring.

I viewed it all as a rite of passage and now I rarely color at all in favor of techniques like fatbit edit, color gamut borders, gradient mixes, and that electronic media the modern workaday world desires that you command with skill.

It's all about coloring using any media such as crayons, colored pencils, markers, or anything else — like pastels or even charcoal.

Coloring stimulates cognitive abilities, advances skills useful for finding a profession, and aids children with spiritual motivation.

Coloring books were the brainchild of the McLoughlin Brothers company with their classic The Little Folks Painting Book from the 1880s.

Painting was the first medium in use. Crayons became the standard around the 1930's.

Coloring is considered beneficial for children and adults. The activity is said to be helpful for those going through trauma and to diminish stress.

National Coloring Day began under the auspices of Jace Shoemaker-Galloway aka "Queen of the Holidays" from whom many of these days we celebrate first began.

Hummingbirds Start Migrating South 2022
Day before last I did maintenance on the two hummingbird feeders I maintain each year.

1 cup of sugar in 3 cups of water brought to a boil then cooled.

I try to keep 32 ounce feeders clean and change 4 cups of nectar at a very minimum once weekly.

Depending on how hot the weather gets it often goes to twice weekly.

The first day after the last change out there was great activity with tiny bird battles for dominance over the food supply and it was pretty much the same from the end of August until yesterday.

Don't hoit da boids.

Hummingbird Feeders 09-10-2022

Today I notice there is not much activity which I attribute to the commencement of their migration south or where ever they go to winter over.

However, I will keep changing the nectar weekly to give them an edge.

I think that I am beginning to recognize various generations of hummers in the area and I notice that the young ones are far less skiddish than ten years or so past.

I have a couple of charcoal colored birds in addition to the many ruby throated variety with their metallic green plumage.

Anyway, another season wanes and though I'm sorry to see the bulk of them go I am grateful for the increased population I've noticed in recent years.

After I finally call it a season I'll make all attempts to be ready for them again come late march. I maintain the feeders through around November to help the stragglers.

I like to get an early start on the next season given the milder local weather.

See ... I'm not TOTALLY bad. Just MOSTLY.

National Day of Encouragement 2022
    encourage
Here we have a National Day of Encouragement.

It is observed annually each September 12.

The day is for providing an uplifting impetus to those around us with the intentions of positive impact toward others.

It's far too easy to trod upon others, and tear them down with malice and negativity when a few words of encouragement can go a long way to lift their spirits if they are down.

Inspire others to better confidence. Spark perspectives which may be missed. Motivation for someone who is struggling or overcoming difficulty is the name of the game on this day.

You could make all the difference in the perspective of another if you only have a bit of encouragement to offer them along the way.

It's not a hardship to offer praise or recognize the efforts of those around us. Therefore the National Day of Encouragement offers you that in to make another person's life better.

Happy National Day of Encouragement to both you and those to whom you reach out on this day !

Patriot Day 2022
Today is Patriot Day.

It is a holiday observed in the United States on September 11 to commemorate the lives of those who died in the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Virginia and those who perished when the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania.

God bless America.

International Make Up Day 2022
Make Up Day
It's international make up day ...

Time for you to break out your makeup kit and put your freak on.

Actually ... I think the day is about rebuilding those bridges between the estranged.

If you say "makeup" you're talking a noun used to turn females into painted women. Men are not above this process either.

I know elderly superintendent poofs who wear too much makeup at work in an attempt not to appear the old farts that they are.

If you say "make up" you're speaking of constituent parts, assemblage, and perhaps apologetics.

Since the day day is about restoring friendships and bridges between others and yourself, overlooking faults and attepting to achieve repair of relationships which may have seen better days ...

It's about making amends, apologizing, and being friends and therefore the word is "make up".

It has been my experience that the spelling of the term is less significant that what it represents.

I tried to reach out once to make up for a wrong but was utterly rebuffed.

I suppose it simply was over though I could not accept that either.

So calm down and accept your fate but at least TRY to

Reach out and make up today if it's indicated for you.

National Nanotechnology Day 2022
stylized nanorobot

Nanotechnology is a branch of technology concerned with dimensions and tolerances of less than 100 nanometers and particularly involves the manipulation of individual atoms and molecules.

I have always been interested in the concept of nanotechnology. However, endeavors related to paying the bills along with the capital expenditures required to pursue such endeavors prevented me from any serious study.

Suffice it to say mine is a high level programming existence and that is the full extent of my technological sphere aside from the requisite hardware and media skills which go hand in hand with it.

The pursuit of science is often limited by the purse strings.

October 9 is National Nanotechnology Day. Each October 9th is a day reserved for the celebration and awareness of how nanotechnology enriches our lives.

So though I cannot really participate due to funding issues and matters of professional interest — I can certainly celebrate the successes of those who do participate in the development of nanotechnology and the possibilities it enables.

Our science is seriously curtailed by those persons who saw fit to keep from us much of that which is history and present endeavors. They have claimed this "right" in the name of security and maintianing control of we, the slaves of the petrochemical industry, main bitch of the military industrial complex.

However technology remains out there to be pursued. We approach that time when much more will be known than is generally available for study at this time.
