International Sweatpants Day 2023
    sweatpants
I'm not one to wear sweatpants, sweatsuits, and other similar athletic attire for various personal reasons.

I don't like the loose fit, sloppy appearance, or lack of solid suspensory support for my package.

They have never been appropriate in any venue in which I have found myself ... not even those rare athletic ones.

I prefer a much more civilized pair of gaberdines in both long pants and shorts by far.

Back in the day I watched The Big Bang Theory and one of the secondary characters was Captain Sweatpants portrayed by Ian Scott Rudolph.

He was funny and relevant to the plot but also typifies my qualms with wearing those garments myself ...

Today is International Sweatpants Day. It goes down each January 21.

The conventional wisdom holds that the day is celebrated by wearing sweatpants for the entire day.

Inasmuch as I do not own a pair of sweatpants and have no intentions of ever buying another I am afraid that I can never participate in the celebration.

I suppose I'll just have to suffer through it all sweatpantsless.

Sorry !

Take a walk outdoors Day 2023
The Riverwalk in West Columbia SC
I used to go for walks and attain some modicum of exercise for a signficant portion of my life.

I would go to the Riverwalk in Lexington and Richland counties and hike about for a couple hours several times weekly.

I used to enjoy it and the health benefits were sigificant.

Today is Take A Walk Outdoors Day.

It occurs each January 20 and provides a reason to go outside for a walk.

You can hike the countryside alone or with another.

I used to walk the concrete sidewalk corridors uptown with my girl back when I was working.

Haven't seen those days for a long time either.

Taking a walk is very good for your health.

I keep promising myself I'm going to get back out there and do some walking once again.

It is not enough to talk about it, however.

Happy Take a walk outdoors Day.

Good Memory Day 2023
    at the river
These days my memory is pretty good. As a result I have many memories upon which to draw when I collect my thoughts.

I remember mess that I should have discarded long ago. Then it throws up blocks on sigificant data like multiplcation tables.

It is at once soothing and infuriating. It's been this way all my life.

Good memories punctuate all the others. I remember the good times and the bad. I remember who took care of me when I couldn't take care of myself. This has made me a strong proponent of the fifth commandment.

My brain, though as complex as any other is not that to which I attribute many of my memories.

Somehow I feel that they also are triggered by my heart.

Today is Good Memory Day.

It hapens each January 19 and was established to encourage us to reserve time for positive thoughts and not leave them delegated to the past.

I try to remember the good times that the bad won't predominate anything.

Happy Good Memory Day to you and I hope all your memories are fond ones.

National Gourmet Coffee Day 2023
Kopi Luwak aka civet coffee
As a person who drinks coffee primarily for it's effects I am reticent to get excited over National Gourmet Coffee Day.

The day simply makes me think of Kopi luwak, aka civet coffee where by the coffee berries are consumed by civets.

These are small mammals indigenous to tropical Asia and Africa.

After consuming the coffee berries, the feces of these animals are collected and the coffee beans are removed then processed and sold for exorbitant amounts on the free market.

I sometimes wonder if I could ever go for these concoctions so fraught with outrageous ingredients and processes.

After all we eat outrageous things in the name of new and exciting experiences and surely civet coffee can't be far off that mark !

No, I'm satisfied with Folgers and a dab of sugar free hazelnut coffee mate in those two daily cups I consume.

Suffice it to say it's gourmet enough to suit me.

Happy National Gourmet Coffee Day.

Don't buy the Logitech MX Mechanical Keyboard
    Logitech MX Mechanical Keyboard

For a hundred and fifty bucks you would think that the crooks at Logitech could do a WHOLE lot better than this piss poor example of a backlit mechanical keyboard.

This Logitech MX Mechanical Keyboard is a lousy, faulty piece of technological junk which will log you out of your computer if you touch it wrong, stop it's totally inadequate backlighting at the most inopportune random moments, and is generally a failure of anything and everything a computer professional would value in an over priced piece of shoddy electronics. Boo !

Boo Logitech

I bought one for my elderly mother thinking it would help her and all it did was make her computer experience insufferable. I don't take kindly to these sort of experiences when it comes to my mother. As a matter of fact, I'm downright evil towards perpetrators in this regard ...

I took it home from her house to test it out and now I'm swearing off all logitech products as well as Office Depot where I bought this piece of utterly infuriating junk.

There are consequences in taking the public for a ride down the path of inferiority. If your stupid buyers can't procure good equipment they need to leave the business. There formerly was a lot of money being spent on both logitech and office depot merchandise.

The gravy train is over.

National Fig Newton Day 2023
    Fig Newtons

Mammy likes Fig Newtons.

She enjoys them with her morning coffee and as a periodic snack.

We typically keep them well stocked — by the case in her home.

That's 36 fig bars per package for a total of 108 servings in a box ... and she's about due for another of these in the immediate future.

Contrary to what Nabisco might say, the Fig Newton is not really a cookie. It is cake wrapped around a fruit center. This would make it a pastry. I think they choose a more main stream name for marketing purposes.

Also, the new age version of the "fig" newton finds a variety of fruit fillings available. Being the Fig Newton purists that we are ...

We prefer the original version.

They have been enjoyed by people since the 19th century when doctors started to promote an increase in dietary fruit to aid digestion.

The name has evolved from "fig roll" to "fig newton" as the result of Nabisco acquiring it as a product for sale.

Regardless, I enjoy them myself so mom and I will likely continue to consume them more or less often as our tastes dictate.

January 16 is National Fig Newton Day. It is an opportune moment to get out and enjoy these pastries for yourself.

Happy National Fig Newton Day.

National Pothole Day 2023
pothole
The Brits have National Pothole Day each January 15 in observance of potholes on their roads.

Potholes are depressions or hollows in the road surfaces usually caused by impact wear, freezing water, or sinking.

However, I'm afraid that Great Britain doesn't have the patent on potholes — and they are no less irritating and damaging on this side of the pond. Therefore, I have taken the opportunity to commandeer this observance for we Yanks suffering from similar issues in the pursuit of conveyance on public roadways.

Potholes are a menace on the streets and hopefully this day will cause their numbers to diminish. Surely the incorporated municpalities of the world will come to realize that cultivating a 'pothole hell' is not really good for amassing a base of happy taxpayers.

Happy National Pothole Day.

Organize your home day 2023
    closet crazy

I'm afraid my organization skills have been somewhat lacking for as long as I can remember.

I used to shrug it off by saying "a cluttered desk is the sign of a genius" ...

But seriously I have attempted improvement in this area over the years largely to no avail.

Today is Organize Your Home Day. This year it happens on January 14th.

It is the time to get inventoried and indexed and arranged as best you can.

Of late, I am one to donate old stuff to the local charities.

I once gave exclusively to Goodwill til they devolved into this utterly slack entity not even bothering to come to the door under the portico and take may donations anymore.

Nowadays I donate to His House. Primarily because they have someone on site to take care of business ... unlike the slacker Goodwill Industries.

Anymore I believe in tossing things I no longer need as well.

This is a function of those criticisms from my niece Rebecca who dared call me a packrat to my face.

Suffice it to say that though I am "neater" than I was there remains a long way to go.

Lisa Marie Presley RIP
Lisa Marie Presley

Lisa Marie Presley
February 1, 1968, — January 12, 2023

Sadly I have learned of the passing of Lisa Marie Presley. She died of a cardiac incident yesterday.

She was an American singer and lyricist. I always thought her to be down to earth and a sweet, beautiful person.

As the only child of singer and actor Elvis Presley and actress Priscilla Presley she was sole heir to her father's estate.

Rest in peace.

Make your dream come true Day 2023
train wreck dreams
At one time or another I think we all have dreams.

Those hopes and wishes we envision for ourselves.

They may entail life, love, employment or other aspects of our existence.

Some of these become realized through hard work and perseverence.

Others go by the wayside lost in the lacking they encounter on their way to reality.

I have had personal dreams for myself over the years.

Some have come to pass.

Others passed me by.

Today is Make Your Dream Come True Day.

It happens each January 13 as a vehicle for recognizing the dreams of people in those hopes of fulfillment.

I hope this day finds you making your personal dreams come true.

National Kettlebell Day 2023
    kettlebell

A kettlebell is a weight lifting device which originated in the USSR a long time ago. It consists of a large ball-shaped weight with a single handle. There was a time when they were strictly cast iron, but now are manufactured to different specs of varying materials and quality.

Nowadays they may be had in a wide variety of colors and sizes and a large set is pretty spectacular to behold. One of the largest set of kettlebells I have ever seen in one place were at the gym operated by the City of Columbia. When I worked there it was run by a world champion weight lifter and she kept her set close by.

I have been known to toss a few kettlebells around now and then — and made the mistake of giving away several of my favorites to my sister who I mistakenly thought would use them.

All she really wants to toss around anymore are cigarettes it seems.

Today is National Kettlebell Day. It is observed on January 12 and celebrates this device which elegant and simple in design yet will turn you into a powerhouse of sinewy musculature.

It resembles a cannon ball to which a handle has been attached. It is very versatile for the development of strength.

One of my aims in life is to acquire a few more to replace those I've given away.

I suppose a more dedicated regimen likewise would go well with all this.

Wish me luck. They cost a lot more these days and the shipping charges are pretty steep as well.

Cigarettes are Hazardous to your Health Day 2023
smoked these a long time
I think I started smoking in high school. My sister always took great amusement in pointing out to me that I smelled like a cigarette from time to time. I suppose it was ordained, being the son of a heavy smoker.

The habit pursued me with interludes of non smoking until well after the Navy when one fine day I gave up all recreational drugs including tobacco and alcohol.

Today is Cigarettes Are Hazardous To Your Health Day.

It is an observance designed to make people aware of the numbers of people still smoking and those hazards to which they subject themselves.

Cigarettes are said to be a drug because of the tars and nicotine they contain. These act as stimulus barriers to many and are a specific physiological poison. In my mind I was primarily concerned with those mannerisms associated with smoking. How I flicked my ashes, how I held the cigarette — other secondary and inconsequential aspects of a deadly habit.

It is my personal belief that "vaping" is an imperfect substitute because though you may escape the tar the nicotine is still there likely in far greater amounts. Also vaping is subject to it's own inherent pathology.

I lost my biological father to the sequela of smoking. Those disease processes culminated in severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema, pneumonia. bronchopleural fistula, and cor pulmonale.

He had about every disease smoking gives you except lung cancer.

It's sad to think that had he been able to shake the habit that he might still be with us.

If you smoke make all efforts to stop. If you don't smoke don't ever start. Save yourself that inevitable grief which grows slowly within the health of the smoker.

National Houseplant Appreciation Day 2023
    President Houseplant

I used to think I wanted to grow house plants.

This is before I got some and killed them all.

I supposedly come from an avid gardening family yet this was of no consequence.

Everything I tried to grow withered and died.

Today is National Houseplant Appreciation Day. It happens each January 10th.

It's all about those benefits of tending an indoor plant renders to the human spirit.

Anyway, then Joe Biden was allowed to steal the election by the stupid Attorney General William Barr who said that the entire notion was AND I QUOTE "bullshit" when Trump complained regarding it.

It seems that Mr Trump was correct and Mr Barr was wrong.

Our AG simply DID NOT do the job.

Anyway from a standpoint of houseplants since we have a houseplant serving as POTUS I give you the President dieffenbachia dumbest cane himself, Joe dumb ass country ruining Biden.

Happy National Houseplant Appreciation Day anyway.

National Fourth Graders Day 2023
I'm afraid the closest I can get to fourth grade in my mind is South Park.

My actual fourth grade experience was at Aragona Elementary School on Jericho Road in Virginia Beach from 1964 through 1965 under the auspices of the evil Mrs Munyon ... who got my ass in more trouble than any other teacher in the entirety of my school days.

The educational value of her misguided propensity for calling parents at 8:30 pm so daddies could drag their children out of bed and beat them continues to escape me. I wasn't the only student of hers to suffer this consequence.

Naturally, I have little to say regarding the matter except no wonder I hate teachers.

Fourth Grade South Park

Today is National Fourth Graders Day. It is observed every second Monday in January and on this year falls on the 9th.

It is said that fourth graders assume more academic challenge in those didactic areas of math, reading, writing, social studies, science, as well as art, music, world language, and physical education.

I'm afraid the woke teachers being permitted to indoctrinate the school children ruin all of that in my mind.

So if your 9 or 10 years old I hope you acquire those skills which will take you through life and ignore the lies and subterfuge your green haired gay woke bitch teacher might wish to throw in the mix.

Discernment and learning, NOT indoctrination and falsehoods.

You're there to learn history and not fabricate and rewrite it to adapt to some false narrative the woke morons might wish.
