Roy Orbison

Roy Kelton Orbison was a pillar of the am radio during my youth.

He was always on and we were always listening.

Even while I was at Camp Sewee in Awendaw he was there on WTMA crooning through the loudspeakers.

In a world of teenybopper, bubblegum, and manly man musical presence he was there offering a sensitivity and complexity unavailable elsewhere.

His passionate belting out of lyrics coupled with his expanse of vocal range was an attraction to me and just about everyone I knew during the 1960s.

Coiffed in dyed jet black pompadour and always dressed in black with dark glasses he commanded a stillness of stage presence which projected mystery with all the art.

He died of a heart attack the age of 52 leaving us with a catalog of emotion, melody, and lyricism which has remained a formidable collection in my lifetime.

Saint Nicholas Eve
Sinterklaas

The holiday season is marked by many observances and celebrations. One of those I try to keep in my heart is Saint Nicholas Eve ... even though it is not indigenous to the United States itself. It remains dear to my heart due to that love of the entire season imparted to me by my parents.

I was fortunate to enjoy a wonderful childhood marked by parents who held Christmas in their hearts. Each impending Christmas season featured lights and decorations and every year there was something new added to the collection.

Indeed, Christmas was always merry.

Today we celebrate the Western Europen legendary tradition of Sinterklaas, the proto Santa Claus whose origins are deeply rooted in the celebration of Saint Nicholas — the patron saint of children (and we who remain child like into our old age).

He goes by a variety of ethnic monikers with today's feast celebrating his "name day" which is an annual celebration marked by the giving of gifts today.

So we in the United States have for the most part adopted this tradition in the spirit of the season and no one can cast it asunder.

That notion that the United States is "no longer" a Christian nation is totally false as was the credibility and qualifications of the brigand Barack Obama and that dude he married to be president and first lady of the country they invaded.

My Biological Father
Jim Williamson Jr MMCM Salley SC
Jim Williamson, Jr
January 29, 1932 - December 4, 2001
Daddy passed on this day in 2001 after an extremely long illness which became fiercely difficult toward the end.

He was a tough and capable anathema to all things wimpy and never complained regarding the severe consequences of his lifestyle disease which was the results of tobacco use.

When all was said and done I was glad for the mercy he was shown at the end even though when that moment came all I could do was cry in all my profound grief.

Over the years I have tried to remember who he was and what he was about rather than those tragic circumstances surrounding his end.

He was a good man and a hard act to follow.

Rest in peace.

Proverbs 3:24

When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

Robert Louis Stevenson "Teller of Tales"
Robert Louis Stevenson
Robert Louis Stevenson
November 13, 1850 – December 3, 1894

One of those hallmarks of my youth was Robert Louis Stevenson.

He was an author from Scotland who wrote action adventure novels just right for a little fantasy land kid such as myself.

I didn't dwell on them, but I dare say some of my mannerisms likely were derived from the various characters I encountered while reading his work.

He traveled extensively ending up in Samoa on a 400 acre estate where he assumed the Samoan name Tusitala ... which means "Teller of Tales".

He wrote many novels and short story collections of which I have perused and enjoyed many times over the years.

He also published collections of poetry as well.

He died at the ripe old age of 44 which is quite young by my reckoning ... you know, with me being so elderly and all.

However, he suffered from episodes of failing health and pursued suitable locations which might benefit his condition to no avail.

His final two attempts to travel to his home in Scotland likewise were unsuccessful.

World Computer Literacy Day
World Computer Literacy Day December 2
Today is World Computer Literacy Day. It was initiated by an Indian computer firm called NIIT to commemorate the 20th anniversary of it's founding in 2001.

Apparently, they read research which indicated that most computer users around the world were of the male persuasion.

So now it goes down each December second in an effort to promote technology skills among the children and aims in particular toward "underserved" communities internationally.

A sidebar regarding it's creation is the promotion of Information Technology training and to celebrate the computer in general.

The Cusp of December
Christmas limb
With November all but gone and December rolling in I am left to ponder those many holidays gone by.

I remember how the holidays were a time for relaxation and I would always seem to gain respite from the stressors of life and the workaday world.

My biological father had Christmas in his heart. It always shone through his participation in decorating and Christmas trees and what have you.

My step father was not exactly a Christmas fan per se, but his kindness, generosity and good will were with us 365 days a year.

As I embark on this, my 63rd Christmas season, I am left with the memories of those gone before that I hold so dear. I endeavor to do better next year though I decline to make a list of resolutions toward that end.

You see, it's impossible to change some things no matter how badly such change may be sought.

It's a difficult matter to attain what I call the "Scrooge Complex" where I might automagically become some enigmatic representation of all that is good and wise in the Christmas spirit ... although that thought is quite appealing.

Far be it from me to stand in criticism of others when my own attitudes could use so much work.

Suffice it to say that I remain a work in progress and toward that end I trudge on to my reward, whatever that may be.

The Electric Smell Interface
    electric smell interface

A system has been developed to transmit weak electrical signals to electrodes in the nostrils to simulate smells.

I suppose this precursor to digital 'smellovision' will add additional enjoyment to those porn videos replete with the smells associated with all that else which transpires on the various outlets.

No, I do not really approve. I don't think that there are any collections of smells that I truly couldn't live without — and somehow that chemical buffer between them and me is comforting.

It's just in my never ending pursuit of technological excellence that vision of a massive flatus collection simply may become irresistable.

Now if I can only figure out how to trigger the mechanism in an elevator and walk away laughing hysterically.

Facebook Incurs the Wrath
Mark Zuckerberg Blows Off international committee hearing in Westminster London
CEO Mark Zuckerberg from facebook incurred the wrath of lawmakers from nine countries who tore him and his company a new one Tuesday after his failure to attend an international committee hearing in Westminster, London.

I wonder just who they think they are anyway.

This guy has declared himself supreme ruler of everthing Facebook and they essentially have nothing to say which is his problem.

He gets paid anyway.

Until these social media boys are held to some set of objective standards for ethics they will continue to exhibit the contempt Facebook and Twitter and Youtube presently exhibit towards both their users and the rest of the world.

So he was lambasted by a bunch of law makers in London.

Big whup. London can't even keep the criminal element which is their Muslim riff raff under control. Their mayor is even a complicent muslim riff raff member. What chance do they have with Zuckerberg?

The Upgrade Saga Continues ...
Ball and Chain
The distro upgrade has been completed for the fourth time.

Each time I learned more about the inner workings.

I have accumulated about all of the information I require.

It seems that the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) stuff is pretty much unnecessary for my lowly box and hard coded into the distro.

So I must endure a boot message stating that there appears to be no bmc at this location and it will remain my little cross to bear unless some patch is released later.

Also, the cloud support embedded in this version is likewise unnecessary as I will not be part of the cloud proper ... but I don't have to pursue it as the firewall handles that nicely.

The burgeoning mail retool has become fairly complicated with the newer security requirements. The SMTP stuff is a breeze. It's the POP and IMAP delivery mess giving me a bit of the fits.

Be all of this as it may, I view it all as the requirements for forward motion in that evolving technology field into which I have been immersed since 1979.

So be it.

Lost in Upgrades
server cluster
It's a difficult matter to maintain cutting edge technology.

I have been implementing a new distro of my OS on the mail server.

I rather wish I had waited but it's too late after you blow away the existing install.

The new distribution (like so many of the older ones) presents features unknown to me and requiring research and study of the modules and their impact upon operations.

Luckily, I have advised the critical others regarding the mail server's status and now have the time to pursue this matter.

Today I will reinstall for the fourth time.

Each time the install is quicker because I am better prepared for it.

They say that the resilient young become the wise old.

I keep wondering what the resilient old become ...

Technology marches on.

Chuck Schumer's gd Birthday
    Chuck GD Schumer

It's democratic idiot and rude yankee loud mouth Charles Ellis Schumer's birthday.

As the senior United States Senator from New York he along with his boorish colleague Maxine Waters ought to just crawl into some nasty Bohemian Grove hole and die.

Only then will they become "good" politicians.

Schumer exhibits the same screwed up 'preferred personal pronoun' mentality as a lot of those others ignorant of reality and facts from from New York ... including would be New Yorker, breaker of US law, killer of US soldiers, and looter of US public office, Hillary Clinton and her up and coming offspring Chelseeh who likely will grow up to monetize public office in the best traditions of her biological mama and stepfather, Bill.

If ever there were a more suitable target for the upcoming false flag UFO attacks in preparations it is the democratic party of the United States.

I just hope they aim those powerful earth-made particle beam weapons from those earth-made crafts with all the rivets in the right place.

Phonies taking out the other phonies ... how apropos that would be indeed.

Happy Birthday Chuck. Now go somewhere and die. Preferably a horrible lingering death. You and Maxine should have the courtesy to stop poisoning the air by breathing it.

Björk Guðmundsdóttir
Björk

Björk Guðmundsdóttir is an Icelandic musician who does an eccletic mix of techno and experimental pieces which have caught my attention since the 1980s.

My first real interest began with her rendition of "Birthday" in 1987 for all the imagery and the alleged controversial meaning said to be behind the lyrics.

She has done a fair amount of trip hop (aka portishead sound) pieces which I have also found quite interesting and has collaborated with a great number of artists and multitude of projects.

Her range is stupendous and her lyrics typically intriguing and then there are her various interactions which make the news that just rounds her out to be the total interesting package for a guy with diverse interests like me.

She also indulges various interests which are not in her musical realm such as acting and that too piques my interest in her from time to time.

Anyway, once you go Björk you never go back ... and I haven't.

She's quite a multifaceted talent and today is her birthday.
