National Lucky Penny Day 2026
1955 Wheat Cent

Today is National Lucky Penny Day.

It goes down each year on May 23.

It is held in honor the popular folklore and superstition that finding a dropped coin brings good fortune.

I personally collect 1955 wheat cents because they were minted the year I was born. They haven't been all that lucky for me however.

The most common tradition is the classic rhyme:

Find a penny, pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck !

Folklore states that finding a coin with heads facing up brings luck. If you find one face down tails, it's tradition to turn it over so the next person can find luck.
Many people celebrate by carrying a penny in their wallet to attract wealth, tossing one into a fountain while making a wish, or visiting a local penny press machine to create a custom souvenir.

Regardless, it doesn't hurt to participate in these folksy tradition which have been around longer than I have.

Happy National Lucky Penny Day and I hope you are lucky all the days of your life !

World Goth Day 2026
    Marilyn Manson
Today we observe another World Goth Day . The day is celebrated annually each May 22. It is an international celebration of the gothic subculture, art, fashion, and music, created to let the scene honor its own culture and make its presence known to the rest of the world.

The day originates in the United Kingdom in 2009 secondary to a BBC Radio 6 series of musical subculture shows to the gothic genre. Instead of holding the celebration on Halloween those in charge purposely chose May to allow the genuine goth community to stand apart and celebrate their identity year-round.

So it is a day for concerts and club nights spinning goth, darkwave, post-punk, and industrial music.

There are typically clothes swaps, parades, and gatherings emphasizing dramatic, romantic, and historically inspired dark attire.

Finally the special events at gothic revival historical sites, poetry readings, and film screenings.

Marilyn Manson is an acquired taste of mine. I don't really think he is totally "goth" per se. He is just who I think of when the topic comes to mind ...

As it does from time to time given my avant garde interests and eclectic spin on life and fashion. I suppose I just like him and his music.

BTW ... his late father, Hugh Angus Warner, was a very good sport who posed with him in full regalia and makeup.

Raymond Burr born
Raymond Burr
One of my mother's most enduring favorite television characters was Perry Mason. He portrayed the trials of a master criminal defense attorney handling the most difficult cases in support of the innocent. Having little to do during these episodes of hers I would often times take them in myself. The noteworthy cast included:

Raymond BurrPerry Mason
Barbara HaleDella Street
William Hopper    Paul Drake
William TalmanHamilton Burger
Ray CollinsLt Tragg
Wesley LauLt Anderson

I was often intrigued by the intricacy of the plot lines and the complex performances required by the actors.

Raymond William Stacy Burr was born on May 21, 1917 at New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada and passed September 12, 1993 at Healdsburg, California. He was a Canadian actor who had a lengthy Hollywood film career and portrayed the title roles in the television dramas Perry Mason and Ironside.

Burr began acting roles on Broadway, radio, television, and film, usually as the villain.

He portrayed the suspected murderer in the Alfred Hitchcock thriller Rear Window in 1954. He also had a role in the 1956 film Godzilla, King of the Monsters! which he reprised in the 1985 film Godzilla 1985.

He won Emmy Awards for acting in 1959 and 1961 for the role of Perry Mason, which he played for nine seasons beginning in 1957 through 1966. He reprised in a series of 26 Perry Mason TV movies from 1985 through 1993.

His second TV series called Ironside, earned him six Emmy and two Golden Globe nominations.

Raymond Burr died allegedly from liver cancer in 1993 when his personal life came into question, as many details of his biography appeared to be unverifiable.

He was ranked number 44 of the 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time by TV Guide magazine in 1996.

His partner was a man named Robert Benevides and their relationship spanned the years from 1960 through 1993.

Pick Strawberries Day 2026
    Strawberries
I love fresh strawberries. Actually I'm okay with frozen strawberries for many concoctions I create in my kitchen. Today we are at the peak season for strawberry picking in many regions. The day has become known as Pick Strawberries Day.

I'm not big on participation at U-Pick establishments such as that run by the late Adger Dunbar from Pelion prior to his passing ... but I think they are a good idea for those willing to get out there and do the "gatherer thing".

So on this day I hope you scarf up as many fresh strawberries as you can fathom and enjoy them on this, their day.

Remember we're "approaching" peak season and aren't quite there yet.

Happy Pick Strawberries Day !

Death to Publix
Death to Publix
Last week I bought chicken wings from the Publix on Gervais at Huger Street only to discover later they had charged me double for them.

Thinking it was simply an unscrupulous employee I went to the other one on Platt Springs Road at SC 6 in Redbank only to discover I had been sold very old product later that day when I was going to eat — but ended up discarding it as the garbage that it was. So ...

Now I know it's not the employee but the immoral chain where the problem lay.

I have remained quite put out with Publix and will not participate in another g et together catered by them.

This will upset various friends and loved ones but I am resolute in this notion that the store is unscrupulous and will take any opportunity to screw the customer.

They have lost my business in perpetuity and I am going to relieve myself of the company of anyone I know who shops with them.

Sure, these people will not understand but I will attempt to run through the fact that they utilize scumbag crook ass organizations for procurement of their food.

Die Publix Die.

No Dirty Dishes Day 2026
    Bosch 300 dishwasher
Yeah, I have a fine Bosch 300 sanitizing dishwasher.

This model is no longer available in stores but it cleans perfectly without spots or streaks and I've been really happy with it since I acquired it.

Today is National No Dirty Dishes Day.

The day is observed annually each May 18.

It is the perfect excuse to skip the sink, dishwasher, or whichever modality you utilize to clean your dishes.

The day encourages taking a break from dirty dishes by picnics, disposable dishes or eating out at restaurants.

As for me, I eat out enough and I doubt very seriously the day will give my dishwasher any break at all.

I like to run a nice sanitizer load most any day of the week because ...

I just do.

Some of us have our 'druthers' and dishwasher loads even in the absence of need will suffice for me personally.

So have a happy No Dirty Dishes Day and do as you will !

The Feast of the Ascension 2026
The Ascension
The Feast of the Ascension, which commemorates the ascent of Yeshua the Christ into heaven.

The Ascension is the foundational Christian belief that The Son of God physically departed from Earth and ascended into Heaven.

In Christianity, it marks the completion of his earthly mission and his exaltation to the right hand of God, celebrated forty days after Easter. The narrative is primarily found in the New TestamentActs 1:3–11, Luke 24:50–53, and Mark 16:19.

It recounts Jesus taking his disciples to the Mount of Olives near Bethany, blessing them, and being lifted up into the clouds. In theology, Jesus ascending to sit at the right hand of God represents the final completion of His saving work on Earth.

It symbolizes His supreme authority over all creation.

Before ascending, Christ commanded the disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the coming of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost), which would empower them to continue His mission.

The Feast of the Ascension is celebrated internationally as a Holy Day of Obligation in many denominations, it always falls on a Thursday, exactly 40 days after Easter.

In many parts of the United States and other countries, the observance of the Solemnity of the Ascension is transferred from the traditional Thursday to the following Sunday.

Glory be to God and the Heavenly Host.

Armed Forces Day 2026
Armed Forces Day

Having grown up a 'navy brat' I have always been "pro armed forces". It's not so much patriotism as duty. I appreciate the importance of the armed forces and only wish I could have set them upon a few groups of my own volition.

No luck initiating 'attack mode' however.

Today is Armed Forces Day. It was declared during 1949–1950 by President Truman to unify separate service celebrations under the Department of Defense to honor, thank, and show appreciation for all active-duty military personnel. The day specifically recognizes those currently in uniform.

It is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May and honors all US active duty, reserve, and national guard men and women on the planet. It was established in 1949–1950 by President Truman as a unification of those separate service celebrations under the Department of Defense.

World Whisky Day 2026
    World Whisky Day 2026
Here we have yet another ubiquitous whiskey celebration. Regardless of how you spell it sots of the world unite: We have another whiskey day.

This one is called World Whisky Day and it happens annually on the third Saturday in May to encourage everyone to enjoy and explore all types of whisky (or whiskey if you're like me), with this year's celebration falling on May 16th.

Whiskey ...
Whisky ...
Whiskee ... ?

This particular Whisky Day was founded by one Blair Bowman in 2012, and is an international celebration promoting whiskey culture through tastings and events, often coinciding with Whisky Month in Scotland ... which I might add is a most excellent place to obtain fine whiskey. Supposedly the crux is to make whisky "fun and accessible" rather than stuffy or intimidating.

World Whisky Day is the Third Saturday in May with a focus on celebration and accessibility. International Whiskey Day is March 27 and has a focus on charity and honoring late English beer and whiskey writer Michael Jackson.

Sounds like a whole lot of imbibing going on. Either way enjoy the day !

Brian Eno Birthday 2026
Brian Eno

I enjoy ambient music.

I like the tone poems and the interplay of various sound palettes as an art form.

Brian Eno was born May 15, 1948 in Woodbridge, Suffolk, England.

He is a British producer,
composer,
keyboardist, and
singer and
helped define and reinvent the sound of some of the most popular bands of the 1980s and '90s.

Despite his tedious prominent outspoken left wing politics and love of whiny progressive causes he also created the genre of ambient music.

This is the only aspect of his existence I enjoy.

Today is his whiny progressive libtard birthday.

Write more music and shut the fuck up otherwise.

World Facilities Management 2026
Industrial Toilet
I recall trips during which my mother required stops at places "with facilities".

This, of course referred to rest rooms with those amenities ladies prefer on the road. This was handled by my daddy who was typically driving.

That would make it May 13 of this year under the auspices of an organization known as Global FM and notes that essential work of facility managers internationally environments safe, healthy, and sustainable by those who manage building services, their maintenance, security, and impact on daily life.

Florence Nightingale

Florence Nightingale is known as the founder of modern nursing.

Hostess Cup Cake Day 2026
Hostess Cup Cake
One of my favorite all time treats is the hostess cup cake.

It is a devils food cake replete with white cream frosting inside and ganache style frosting outside and a piped vanilla icing squiggle across the top.

I have been known to consume these with great abandon on occasions and it was no wonder that I was an obese child long before it became a national tragedy.

So on this observance of the Hostess Cup Cake I hope you can take the opportunity to partake.

It's far beyond indulgence as far as I am concerned.

Happy Hostess Cup Cake Day.
