I used to religiously lighten my many cups of coffee each day with Coffee mate.
I was particularly fond of the sugar free hazelnut variety — until the ungrateful wretches became increasingly more difficult to do business with.
Now to top things off they appeared to decide that the retail value of their creamer powder is about that of gold bullion and it's an over priced zero quality addition to supermarket shelves everywhere. I make it a point to aim my shopping cart and collide with the shelf displays on occasion sending cans of the stuff flying.
So after years of buying some 30 cans of various flavors each month to have with my morning coffee and share with my cohorts at work I decided they were too expensive and ENTIRELY too uppity with whom to do business and I stopped using their product at all.
I have been much happier with the Torani sugar free hazelnut syrup which I have used to replace the god awful Coffee mate holier than thou production company's product.
It tastes better. It dissolves easier. It is a richer full flavored product and the substitution of real dairy Half and Half is bound to be a healthier choice than the chemicals Coffee mate uses as a substitute for artificial coffee flavoring and lightening product.
The moral of the story is leave the gd coffee mate on the shelf and get yourself a real food coffee product replacement.
To heck with Coffee mate. They don't deserve your business.

- National Apple Day 2023

I've consumed a lot of apples over the years. I'm particularly fond of the Granny Smith and Red Delicious varieties for opposite reasons.
Today is National Apple Day. It happens on October 21 and is dedicated to celebrating the apple and those items which are made from them.
The apples in the United States are derived from European stock and there is a historical mythological character named Johnny Appleseed who was singularly responsible for the massive propagation of orchards here.
Regardless of the variety the apple is a healthy snack and you might indulge at your leisure should you feel so inclined.

I was able to get in there and handle the situation then get out with my sanity ... at least what I perceived to be my sanity — intact.
Today is Information Overload Day an annual feature of October 20.
It's a day is for stepping back from daily information processing and having a look.
I don't do social media so it's never a consideration. I receive text messages regularly but rarely send them.
I hit the emails pretty hard but have good keyboard skills as well.
This is a day to take a break from all of that.
The day arises from the efforts of one Jonathan Spira in 2009 when he cited Information Overload as his company's problem of the year.
Pooh. Phooey. Crybaby.
IMHO information overload only happens in the presence of those inferior skills of the non hacker.

Today is National Get Smart About Credit Day. It happens each third Thursday in October which is October 19th this year.
The day is about good credit habits and credit worthiness.
The concepts surround:

My personal credit worthiness has evolved over the years.
I have been a high earner with an ability to make bank early on in my career.
My credit was poor nonetheless because I didn't observe the habits of good credit and it was an issue until one day my step dad took me aside and set me straight.
I won't go into the gory details but suffice it to say he gave me a tongue lashing and called me all those names you never want to hear hurled at you.
Then when I left the credit union — who thought they were my collective mama and needed to control my every financial move — I found things went far better for me personally.
It has all worked too. Since those days I have followed the straight and narrow and I have good credit as a result.
This has enabled me to attain the 2% mortgage in a 7%+ world ... and other amenities of fiscal responsibility which eluded me early on.
So, if you find yourself less responsible than you might like this is a good day to sit down and take inventory of your assets and liabilities and get with an institution which isn't the control freak the credit union wants to be.
We can't all be lucky to have a step father who cared enough about us to get us out of hock and make things utterly transparent.
I was once a fool but now I am not.

- National Necktie Day 2023

Early in my career in computer troubleshooting and repair I shunned the necktie, dress shirt, and all other aspects of formal attire. I caught a lot of flack about it too. My usual attire consisted of jeans and a tee shirt which I thought appropriate to pulling and building cables, wire wrapping, and a life of testing, modification, and then testing some more.
Later, I migrated to the college scene teaching computer courses to the masses. Initially I was in the very casual attire mode with which I arrived on the scene. Luckily my skills overrode what anyone had to say about my appearance.
So even later I migrated to the dress shirt, nice trousers, and yes ... the neck tie as a standard aspect of my attire. Half Windsor knot, full Windsor knot according to how I felt.
I suppose it grew on me because when I left the outrageous assholes at the City of Columbia I had a large wardrobe of formal attire to include several large racks of neck ties.
Today is National Necktie Day. It arrives each October 18 annually in honor of the invention of the necktie. This accessory for the fashion aware is the result of Croatian mercenaries who wore them as a neck protectors.
National Necktie Day is a popular holiday in Croatia since 2008 — when it was recognized as an official holiday by the Croatian Parliament.
Yeah, I can tie all the knots. When I arrive you can be my tie is properly tied and gathered in a loose knot. Sometimes I wear it close other times it hangs by a goodly amount.
A fashionista I have never been. My attire simply evolved with both my skills and maturity in the workplace.

- Amazing Grace Hopper

When I was in the Navy Admiral Grace Hopper was nearing the end of her career. She had contributed to the evolution of computer programming, but at that time I still thought I was pursuant of medicine and acted accordingly ...
She was born December 9, 1906 at New York City, New York. The passed in her sleep of natural causes on January 1, 1992 at age 85 in Arlington County, Virginia.
Anyway, I knew of "Amazing Grace" Hopper and she was a legend in her own time. I was never to attain that lofty status in my career.
She was instrumental in the creation of COBOL and developed the first compiler.
Admiral Hopper worked on the Harvard Mark I computer which was electromechanical and largely received input from 60 sets of 24 switches for manual data entry.
It could store 72 numbers, each 23 decimal digits long perform 3 additions or subtractions in a second. A multiplication took 6 seconds, a division took 15.3 seconds, and a logarithm or a trigonometric function took over one minute.
She is also known for discovering the first "bug" in a computer program which was an actual insect, mind you.

There has been a lot of back pain in my family. I have siblings who have suffered greatly from both it and sciatica which is proximal in location.
The sum total of that pain is a formidable problem with which to contend and maintain a steady work life or even get around satisfactorily. Back pain is a leading cause of disability internationally.
Each October 16 many around the world celebrate the progress made and attempt to educate others about back and neck health on World Spine Day.
World Spine Day is a day to spread the word about spine conditions, educate people or get educated on how to avoid or treat them, and get inspired to take better care of your general back and neck health. This day began in 2008 under the auspices of the World Federation of Chiropractic.
As such, World Spine Day is a vehicle used to raise awareness of back pain and other health issues relating to the spinal column. Some billion people worldwide suffer from back pain, spinal pain other disabilities which span age groups, gender, and ethnicity.
Each year a new clever theme is planned to make the day more memorable in an attempt to ensure World Spine Day raises the awareness of spinal health and those disorders associated with the spine.
I hope you have found the solutions to any back pain you have encountered and that you maintain good spinal health for the duration.
I occasionally get back pain myself and this has me decompressing my spine using an inversion table periodically.
This activity affords me quick relief and I try to keep it up prior to developing any problems.

Far be it from me to claim I never cop some mood. Yeah, I've been known to get all ticked off with various things here and there. You might even call me a grouch should you encounter me in one of these occasional states.
Today is National Grouch Day. It orginates as an honor of Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street. It happens on October 15th and celebrates the grouches in our midst. It is also a time to embrace that grouch which occasionally surfaces within all of us.
So so today it's okay to complain and be irritable. If you choose to wallow in your own misery so be it. These are the characteristics of a grouch and today is your day so whine, moan, and groan right on !
You can deliver or receive a few jokes. Feel free to post that grouchy visage on social media if it's your thing.
The processing of negative emotions can only serve to clear them from our slate as we continue down the road of life.

I knew I was going bald in high school. The thinning hair upon my head did not escape me.
Despite this my daddy thought that proper grooming meant some onion inspired hair style and as such I was well beyond my youth before I was allowed to pursue my own hair-do ...
For that miniscule amount of time which remained.
Today is Be Bald and Be Free Day. It is an October 14 observance designed to showcase the bald who attain this condition by nature or malady.
Over the years I have come to accept my male pattern baldness. I suppose I figured that in retrospect, going bald was no worse than my remaining hair turning snow white as I became older. I have never shaved my head per se but indeed the clipper sometimes appears to have done this based on my appearance.
Not having suffered from any form of alopecia other than that which 60 percent of men find themselves confronting I too attempted the various rememdies available at the time. They were all inadequate and did not prevent any hair loss other than perhaps a few wisps.
So if you're bald this is your day. If you're not bald I hope you have evolved past the cruelty present in so many of the insipid inbred Southerners I have known over the years.
I don't like being bald. I'm certainly not happy about it. I just accept it. What is my choice ? It appears to be invest in a large can of Johnson's paste wax and work up a rich wax shine.

- Same ole Problem Children

It's amazing how the issues associated with hack attempts and other exploits remain as static as they do. I'd like to think that they were ever changing as the seashore but indeed — they remain the same groups at the same subnets with the same poor show they always exhibit.
Persons attempting open relay capture of another persons mail server is pretty slimy. However, it persists and from the same places as in the first 3 iterations of the server cluster.
The shabby scrape attempts likewise are pretty much from those same foreign agents they've always been.
The attempts to hack my ftp server likewise are pretty sophomoric and ineffectual. People should practice keeping their own stuff safe and leaving that of everyone else alone.
I don't see this happening, however.
Though I don't fully understand the allure I am content to throw up those brick walls in the face of the exploiter.
My hopes that they will all die simply are not coming to pass.
So I am always on the lookout for some agent to block, some problematic subnet to firewall, some other .htaccess methodology available to me to keep them halfway at bay.
I detest the cheap shot persons driven to exploit the assets of others out here on the internet.

Today we have another National No Bra Day.
It's a day devoted to learning about breast health.
It doesn't propose anything risque or naughty.
It's a feature of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it reminds us that breast cancer is potentially fatal though quite detectable in the early stages when circumvention is the standard of the day.
October 13 is aka “the moment we get home from work“ day.
It's not promoting anything which might prove embarassing on the workaday front. July 9, 2011 and October 19, 2011 mark the dates of founding in both Canada and the United States.
Breast cancer is not solely a disease of women. Men can contract it in a percentage of cases. Male victims are likewise deserving of our compassion. Too often crass jokes prevail in what is a serious matter of health and wellbeing. Far better to detect and cure than to ignore and die.

I have long held that beliefs should not be the results of someone thinking they're in authority like the democrats, traditions, some mystic revelation, or even concepts such as morality and religious faith but should be reached by sound principles of logic and reality, observation, and empiricism.
Today is National Freethought Day observed each October 12 to recognize the value of independent thinking. This is anathema to the democrat politicians who wish to rule your every move and tell you what you think.
The date originates from the Salem witch trials when William Phips who was governor of colonial Massachusetts sent a letter to the Brit monarchy expressing concern for the brain dead methodology of the trials which were based on subjective, not objective data. This resulted in mass protests and finally cessation of what was an idiotic pursuit as well. Like the failed notions of Salem Massachusetts the democrats consider You to be the witches on trial with them standing as inquistors and persecutors who would hang you then confiscate what you own.

- The Luxury of New Technology

I recently overhauled my server cluster due to the abrupt failure of the web half of the old one coupled with the advancing age of the email half.
There were no real "early warning" errors. Applications began bombing abruptly — Some at regular others at random intervals.
Soon the situation became untenable when interface failures were the predominate feature of my once flawless operation.
Yes, so taking the plunge out of necessity I was set upon by a vastly new list of rules and a new set of their dependencies that at first appeared foreboding.
While I have never been one to panic in the face of adversity, technical or otherwise I saw fit to fret a smidge over the situation which presented itself and I even considered shucking the on prem cluster altogether.
Then while in the midst of innumerable requirements in the form of apps and commands as well as cross references of the various server setup requirements for full functionality I hit on the methodology which would ultimately work for me.
It was Mom who told me to "Take it one bite at a time".
It seems in my panic to be back online posthaste I was trying to multitask too much and forego written notes and it impeded progress.
So I stepped back, took a breath, then got to the business of mapping out everything I needed. It can be said that Notepad++ became a flurry of activity and my FTP server a repository of reinventing the wheel.
A scant 4 days later I was up and runnning. Another two or three days of tweaks and I had created server cluster far beyond that which it replaced.
So now I have yet another server cluster of which to be proud.
The moral of the story is Mom may not know much about the internet of things, but she knows life and when one finds themself being given good advice it's typically beneficial to take it.

- World Day Against the Death Penalty 2023

I am pro death penalty.
There is a lot to be said for the totality of never being able to become a repeat offender as we see with the Biden administration's catch and release policy which aids and abets criminals. Judicial execution is as final as it all gets. Yes, I am aware that there are many others who view the death penalty as wrong. These people obviously want to be all cuddly with murderers and rapists and I am simply immune to all that soft drivel eminating from their tolerant stupidity.
Were they relatives of some victim of murder or other equally henious act they might not be so namby pamby.
Today is World Day Against The Death Penalty. It goes down each October 10 under the auspices of the various libtards and passivists inhabiting the planet. These people would choose alternatives which are difficult to sustain that a murderer or rapist be housed and clothed and fed.
I dare say that — were it me — I personally would prefer execution to a life of imprisonment if a condemned criminal. I realize from an inmate perspective that the majority would likely prefer being supported by the state as prisoners for life. Far be it from me to have the state provide their meager sustinance over some protracted period of time. I do not feel my tolerance for incarceration is sufficient to sustain me over the duration of a "life sentence" ...
It's one thing to be innnocent of the charges. However, when guilt has been established beyond a shadow of a doubt I feel that all appeals should be ended. Every person against the death penalty feels as though society exists as some fountain of cash to provide food, clothing, and shelter for the criminal element.
The democrats would just as soon allow murderers and rapists to be freed without bond to strike down the innocent as many times as humanly. Murderers who are given transsexual treatment should be taken out summarily along with the idiot libtard judge who ordered it.
I am simply against coddling the guilty as we are so inclined to do in our leftist libtard obama acolyte infested world. He is a homo who brought a man into the white house as first lady. He is unsuitable as a chief executive. He is unsuitable as a citizen. Send him back to Kenya where he was born and belongs.
Murderers and rapists have no rights as far as I am concerned and should be dispatched slowly and painfully.
