National Umbrella Day 2024
Gustbuster Pro Series Gold Golf Umbrella
When I was last employed I was at a local incorported municipality manning a straight nine to five shift. I always maintained an extremely large black golf umbrella that I might traverse the city streets in the rain without soaking my work regalia.

Back then I was a formal-attire conscious white shirt and dress pants, necktie, and leather shoes kind of guy with accessories I attached to my clothing in the form of badges and thumb drives and even tweakers and various other accoutrement of the well heeled techie.

Today is National Umbrella Day. It is observed each February 10 to recognize that accessory which allows us to shed water as though from a duck's back.

My signature umbrella back then was the Gustbuster Pro Golf umbrella. I liked it because it was huge and allowed excellent coverage and the superior wind resistance. Ultimately I became known as someone who could lend a high quality umbrella during sudden onset rain storms.

Those good ole working days have been long gone. I no longer have the same need or impetus to carry a truly excellent umbrella anymore. I still admire them, however. Call it a throwback to my past.

Happy National Umbrella Day to you.

National Cut The Cord Day 2024
    cut cat 6 twisted pair
Mom has fully wireless house wide internet connectivty. She gets 150 megabits per second over a redundant set of routers with fail over and she seems pretty happy with it all. This situation was by design and I had things planned out and the equipment bought prior to her house being finished.

Today is National Cut the Cord Day. It promotes the use of wireless network connectivity for the common man ... er and woman.

It occurs each February 9th and is a vehicle by the totally inadequate and poorly run Sling TV, who have no desire to offer a COMMERCIAL FREE tier and therefore lost my business early in their meager measly notalent existence.

Streaming differs from cable in the delivery. Streaming is a public domain service whereby you attach your equipment to a live internet connection and go to town. Cable requires a dedicated connection which is ususally in the thicknet media range to private equipment.

I opt for the no commercial tiers of streaming offerings. I would much rather pay more and receive less commercial interruptions. I have had providers drop their commercial free tiers only to have me drop them with extreme prejudice.

Suffice it to say that Mom will remain wireless to provide her some modicum of freedom in her domicile. She has a lot of broadband connected equipment which operates quite well in this scenario.

NO Sling

Fat Thursday 2024
pączki
We approach the passover season, wrongly called 'Easter' by the pagan uninitiated.

Fat Thursday goes down on that Thursday prior to Ash Wednesday each February and is positioned before the 40 days of Lent.

This year is will be celebrated on February 8 and is that time to indulge prior to the lean time of Lent.

There are numerous Polish traditions associated with Fat Thursday and most notable of these are the pączki or jelly filled donuts powdered with sugar and consumed with great relish. There are many other taste treats associated with the holiday.

The Christian tradition of Fat Thursday is sometimes associated with the celebration of Carnival.

I hope you can take this last opportunity prior to Lent &mdashp; which is a time of fasting, the days leading up to Ash Wednesday provide the last opportunity for feasting until Easter.

Rose Day 2024
    rose
I used to be a giver of roses. There were times over the years the act got away with me and I had women thinking I was attempting to be more in their lives than I thought. While it was an embarassment on a few occasions other times it was very gratifying.

I think that a gift of flowers is a thoughtful addition to any relationship, budding or close, platonic or otherwise. While I no longer actively pursue the female of the species as I once did in a younger day, the memories which remain are both poignant and varied.

Today is Rose Day. It happens each February 7th annually and marks the commencement of Valentine’s week. When I was working the old '9 to 5' I was known to arrive with several two pound Whitman's Samplers for the ladies in the office on each and every Valentines Day. Unfortunately the candy was all too often scarfed down by the dudes in the office prowling for the same taste sensation. It wasn't meant for them, however.

Be all of it as it may, the rose is a very appropriate gift based on the color and timeline. Different colors have different meanings applied to them. The two I used to give most often were yellow and red roses.

In the dull and commonplace events of day to day living I hope you will take a moment to consider the rose as a token. A rose by any other name would indeed still smell as sweet and I remain a fan after all these years.

National Chopsticks Day 2024
chopsticks
There's a Japanese restaurant in Saint Andrews I used to frequent. Now I only make it there intermittently. Inakaya Watanabe is run by my friend Ryo San and it is a good place to go for authentic Japanese dishes — in addition to Asian fusion and other international specialties as well.

When I go there I typically don a pair of chopsticks and go to town. There was a time when I had less facility with them by and large but that was then and this is now. I can now eat any manner of sushi or sushimi in the best traditions of The Ginza and what's more, it's food I sincerely love and enjoy.

Chopsticks have been in use since about 1200 BC and they are a staple of Asian cusine and utensils I pride myself in being able to use deftly.

If you enjoy Japanese food as much as I there is a place for you at the sushi bar and in Japan sushi means community. I once would never do much speaking while eating but nowadays I jump right in there and participate.

I plan on going back there soon to enjoy those dishes I miss so much.

Western Monarch Day 2024
Like the honeybees and the bumblebees the butterflies are a focus of my attention in these days of stupid county employees "accidentally" spraying them with malathion. There should be legislated protection for these species left to the ineptitude of some Dorchester county moron let loose with chemical weapons designed to kill them — but there isn't.

    Western Monarch Butterfly
Today is Western Monarch Day. Each February 5 we witness the return of the Western Monarchs to California marking some 3000 miles traversed from various parts of the Western US. When I was a resident of California this was a more important part of my yearly observations.

Now, being the deep south denizen I remain since then not so much.

The season of butterfly migration should be signficant to more than it is, but I lost that battle long ago when I gave up being a personal spokesman for those species which cannot speak for themselves.

Suffice it to say the diminishing numbers of the monarch butterfly should be sufficiently alarming to many but I fear most simply ignore the facts and on top of that do not care. Their numbers have dipped some 90 percent. I will personally mourn their eventual extinction.

Liberace Day 2024
Władziu Valentino Liberace

When I was a young child, Liberace was an American pianist, singer, and actor who had his own television show called 'The Liberace Show' which appeared on the black and white television. It was a fifteen minute thing and I watched many episodes as a bambino.

Władziu Valentino Liberace was born May 16, 1919 in Wisconsin to parents of Italian and Polish origin and died of pneumonia which was the sequela of acquired immunodeficency syndrome on February 4, 1987.

His career spanned the decades including 1936 through 1986. During the pinacle of his career he was the highest paid entertainer on the planet from his many concerts, recordings, television, motion pictures, and endorsements. His friends called him Lee. Oprah called him Lib. His final performance was on her show of December 1986

His lifestyle while performing and at home was flamboyant and the picture of excess. He had a love for ornate pianos and added candelabras as accessories. He wore rhinestone costumes which sparkled and flaunted that wealth which was his yet he was complex far beyond those material posessions which he was so happy to place on display.

Liberace Day is celebrated annually on February 4th in his memory.

Take A Cruise Day 2024
   Johnny on Carnival

Many people enjoy going for a cruise. Many engage in 3 to 7 day excursions — sometimes periodically.

Such was my late step father, John Pruett. Johnny loved going out onto the ocean on a cruise ship where he was berthed in a weatherdeck balcony cabin and he would sit and look at the water and the various things encountered there.

He attempted me to join him and mama on a cruise and I respectfully declined, unknowing of just how quickly I was to lose him to the VERY bad decision of his so-called physician ...

Today is Take a Cruise Day. It is a February 3rd occurrence and celebrates that wonder called the cruise ship. Every time I see a Carnival cruise ship I think of Johnny. He always said to be careful of your background when snapping weatherdeck photos. The consequences may make you look like an ogre.

So I hope you'll take John Pruett's advice and take a cruise if you are of the inclination and budget. I agree that there is not really a comparison between it and the Navy, but as I told Johnny, when my hitched ended I was through with ships.

In retrospect I wish I had traveled with him at least once. I miss Johnny Pruett very much.

Relapse
Relapse

I appear to have suffered a relapse of the crud which I thought I had totally shaken.

I fear that some of my cleaning efforts involved chemicals which likely contributed to this and I have made adjustments on that end.

Anyway I've been down for yet another week and remain at less than 100%. Suffice it to say convalescence has been a protracted and difficult matter.

I hope to get back to the blog today but we'll just have to see how it goes.

Happy Birthday in Heaven Daddy 2024
Mama and Daddy

My daddy passed this earth on December 4, 2001. He died as the result of his lifestyle, being a heavy smoker all his life.

He was a Navy man and a proponent of 'the Navy way' and anything they allowed he figured was okay.

When the smoking lamp was lit aboard ship he likely was puffing away. This habit followed him through retirement.

He underwent severe surgery in an attempt to repair bronchopleural fistula. They missed the empyema thoracis and this poisoned his kidneys.

It was then we knew he had reached the end of the road. He was given a morphine sulfate protocol and allowed to die. All I could do was cry.

We have missed him terribly over the years.

Data Privacy Day 2024
Guy Fawkes
So data privacy isn't such the priority in business these days. My mortgage company sent me the second letter telling me about their latest data breach so I've involved a more competent group of people to track this mess than they obviously can muster. I wish I'd never heard of these people.

Luckily my credit reports stay frozen due to my general suspicion of every one in the United States with the democrats allowing all manner of criminal element in to prey on the tax payer.

I think the executive administration should be taken out and executed as the traitors they are. They are not upholding their oath of office ... or anything else for that matter.

Data Privacy Day is a facet of the alleged global online safety, security, and privacy campaign called STOP. THINK. CONNECT. which is allegedly some misbegotton initiative of the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA).

You are all failures.

I don't think the government wants data privacy. I think they want to control you too closely for that. Nikki gd democrat in RINO clothing Haley sure does. I hope that crook gets packed up in a box and shipped to India along with her parents, husband, and children. That's where she should be.

We have the criminal executive administration seeking to control every aspect of our money with the Central Bank Digital Currency because they are criminal scum. They don't seem to think that this will go down unchallenged and the congress has a bill that would stop the Federal Reserve from working on the entire notion of dirty dealing central bank digital currency without giving the full house the opportunity to consider just what these scumbag democrats propose.

The biggest liar on the planet Dick Durbin of course appears to be paid by the payment card industry and I hope his stupidity gets put under the microscope as well. His Durbin Amendment is about as corrupt and most failed government policy of all time. He should not be allowed to fleece the taxpayer as is his apparent career.

I do not understand why crooks are allowed to remain in government when they should be captured, placed in chains, and sent to gitmo to suffer for the remainder of their miserable crook ass lives. Where is a little advocacy for the tax payer when we really need it. All we get is Durbin and his moron ideas of how to take more and more of money the democrats haven't ALREADY confiscated otherwise. Enough !

Thomas Crapper Day 2024
    crapper nouveaux

The commode.

The great big porcelain appliance into which we either insert, pour, or eject various things from our existence into ...

It was not invented — but perfected — by a plumber, one Thomas Crapper and every year on the anniversary of his death we celebrate that mechanism of elimination he bestowed upon humanity.

His brainchild was slow to catch on having been adopted by and large by the late 19th century.

He held patents and routinely manufactured sanitary appliances such as pipe joints, drain improvements, manhole covers, and water closet improvements like the floating ballcock.

Mr Crapper established The Crapper & Co which even was equipped with a showroom in London.

Thomas Crapper became a legend in elimination.

His is the inviting kind of invention that beckons you step up to the bowl and make it a double.

Happy Thomas Crapper Day.

Now go take one — er ... LEAVE one.

Attack of the Crud 2024
Osmosis Jones
Yesterday late I fell ill with thick viscous exudate from my sinues and a bit of a productive cough.

Felt lousy too. It was all late breaking and my night was pretty uncomfortable.

I have had a number of people attach a name to this mystery illness. I personally just call it "the crud".

The cough, the runny nose were the primary hallmarks of what others are saying is some viral illness beset me in the tender young youth of my old age.

I would call it some viral upper respiratory illness but there is no fever, just some malaise and I'm fighting it off fairly well and expect to kick it sometime in the next day or two.

The Aleve I'm going to start should make the sleep less fitful.

    Aleve liquid gels
I suppose I could have been more vigilent with the hand washing and more in the way of personal preventives but it's too late for all that now. I'm washing my hands in an effort to keep Mom and my friends from coming down with it all.

I don't think it's COVID-19 either and the stupidity of that memory of governmental meddling means I'm not pursuing any public health advice from those political power seeking morons either.

So if they bring me to your emergency room just push me out in traffic but kindly don't intervene otherwise.

Hope you are "more well" that I am right now.

A Room of One's Own Day 2024
A Man Cave
I once dreamed of a man cave. A place to hang out and call my own. Now my entire crib is a man cave. I typically revel in my solitude and experiment with various things at hand.

I enjoy cooking on my new high falutin GE gas range.

I enjoy maintaining my clothes with my new Hotpoint washer and dryer.

I keep my dishes and pots and pans spic and span with my new Bosch dishwasher which was ENTIRELY too expensive.

I have a set of large bluetooth wireless speakers from which I hear the various tunes which accompany my day.

I have a bathroom where I perform my daily constitutionals.

All in all my modest little 1300 square foot house is that room of my own and therefore a likely candidate for "A Room Of One’s Own Day".

This observance happens on January 25 annually and was inspired by the work of author Virginia Woolf some 90+ years back. The exact impetus for the day is actually unknown but it is a time to celebrate independence. It also promotes the act of being self sustaining.

Regardless, I hope you have a house or at least a room to call your own. It can be very liberating of the spirit.
