World Tuna Day 2023

I used to make regular trips to the Inakaya sushi bar in Saint Andrews operated by Mr Ryo Watanabe.

There I would feast on various delights of marine fish and freshwater eel and typically could not wait to return.

Two of my favorite items on sushi and sashimi plates are tuna.

I am a big fan of toro, the fatty tuna formerly discarded as catfood but now sold at a premium.

I also like maguro, the lean red tuna from other more muscular parts of the fish. Either, and typically both may be found on my plate when I eat sushi.

Packaged solid white albacore also makes it to my plate in various tuna salads regularly.

I keep overlooking the mercury warnings for consuming marine fish. This may or may not be creating unknown problems for me on an ongoing basis.

Today is World Tuna Day.

It is observed on May 2 and is primarily a coastal zone celebration of some of my most favorite food animals.

The name of the game on this day is protecting schools of tuna from habitat destruction and overfishing by the 96 some odd countries which exploit schools of tuna in the oceans.

Anyone who has seen a tuna swim can attest to the size and speed of this fish propelling itself through the water.
