The Perseid Meteor Shower has been around longer than I have. There have been occasions when I would attempt to view it. Anymore I think it's an interesting piece of astronomy for those interested a bit more than I am these days.
The Perseid Meteor Shower peaks around August 9 annually.
This is the time where the meteors shine the brightest.
You don’t need any special equipment or an expensive telescope to view the constituents of the Perseid meteors. They are available via the naked eye in any part of the sky. The limiting factor will be the weather.
The clouds can block the view. If you are fortunate to be in a dark and clear area of sky you may experience this shower from where you are.
The Perseid shower is said to have been first observed 285 AD by members of the Catholic Church. The lights in the sky were said to be the tears of Saint Lawrence, who was immolated by the church in it's effort to control every aspect of people's lives.
It's said that this year viewing won't be as spectacular as it has been in the past. The best viewing times to is during pre-dawn hours when the sky is the darkest with about 100 meteors an hour if your view is not blocked by cloud layer.
Good luck if you choose to view the Perseid Meteor Shower this year !
