Midsummer Day 2024

    Midsummer Day 2024
So we're halfway through the harvest season bringing us to Midsummer.

This holiday celebrates that traditional midpoint as well as the summer solstice which went down on Thursday, June 20th this year; marking our longest day in the Northern Hemisphere.

It commonly features a maypole dance. The last time I participated in a Maypole dance I was in the third grade at Aragona Elementary School in Virginia Beach, Virginia and they could never get me out there to prance around some pole with the girls ever again.

The day traditionally starts the beginning of warm weather. I can attest to the fury of the southern heat around here lately. This week we're having afternoon and evening showers and it provides a respite from the furnace we navigate otherwise.

There are countless regional traditions associated with Midsummer's Day and I hope you participate in those which appeal to your sense of personal history.

Me, I'm just trying to stay cool.
