Lá Fhéile Pádraig 2024

    four leaf clover cross
I recall from my childhood the various St Patrick Days in which I participated. There were a few in which I failed to don some garment or accessory of green and got pinched. All in all though I never really looked forward to the day I did always enjoy it when it arrived during my elementary school years spread across Mare Island at Vallejo, California, Blackfoot, Idaho, Aragona Village at Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Hanahan, South Carolina in the years 1961 through 1967.

Today is Saint Patrick's Day aka the Feast of Saint Patrick.

As is my custom, I have selected the four leaf clover motif — because I have always associated it with both the Irish and Saint Patrick's Day.

Saint Patrick's Day is a religious and cultural holiday held on March 17 which corresponds to the traditional death date of Saint Patrick (c 385 – c 461) who, as it would turn out is the foremost patron saint of Ireland.

The day is locally celebrated in entertainment districts nearby my place of residence. The celebrations were held on Saturday which was obviously felt to be more appropriate given the Bible belt locale in which we live.

Those venues featured everything from all manner of food and refreshments, green beer, water fountains dyed green, to green hair coloration and the absolutely required green attire. Of course the local news outlets followed the festivities closely.

Many friends of Irish ancestry take the day to heart passionately and I have always enjoyed this about them.

Though I wasn't in attendance at the St Patrick's Day celebration at Five Points in Columbia SC Saturday, I wish those participants well and hope they had a smashing time.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day even if you celebrated yesterday !
