Youth Homelessness Matters Day 2025

homeless female youth
Back in November of 1976 when I was in electrical school at Great Lakes, Illinois we took a number of road trips to Chicago 30 miles to the South.

One of our trips found us at an intermediate rest area gaining relief from a night of imbibing and we encountered a young lady who was homeless and hanging out to escape the frigid winds blowing full force outside.

Fred Wozniak, with whom I was travelling in his VW Bug, had a few gentle words with her and handed her a little cash before we departed. The thing that I have always remembered since that day was her sad eyes and look of dejection.

It was gut wrenching to see another so in need of those creature comforts I had never been without a day in my life.

Today is Youth Homelessness Matters Day.

It is primarily an Australian observance held on the third Wednesday in April — which makes it April 16 this year. However, the problem is international and includes the United States.

The crux of the day is raising awareness and public discussion of homeless young people in an attempt to provide solutions which work and may be maintained.

Domestic and family violence weighs heavily in these matters and as such make the considerations a priority.

So while the shelters hide many the streets display many others for the world to see. The streets of Los Angeles, New York, and other democrat strongholds are populated with many homeless.

Don't get me wrong, there are some who actually pursue the homeless lifestyle. All too many others seek respite and the comfort and caring of a household.

So in this day of homeless youth I hope you'll take pause and remember that young girl I saw briefly on the road near Great Lakes that cold and windy night.

The youth homeless are an international problem with complex and varied solution requirements.
