World Turtle Day 2021

Green Turtle
My earliest memories of being up close and personal with turtles stem from visits to Grandma's farm when I was very young.

There would be turtles rescued from fish traps and some of these were quite large.

Then we relocated to Key West Florida while dad was in the Navy and I had a couple of visits to the Turtle kraals where I was REALLY close to very large turtles ...

There were green and hawksbill turtles as well as a number of other fish and sea animals like the goliath grouper which I personally thought was positively stupendous.

Today is another World Turtle Day which goes down each May 23rd under the auspices of American Tortoise Rescue.

The day is meant to bring attention to, and increase knowledge of and respect for, turtles and tortoises with an emphasis on helping them to both survive and thrive.

It is my habit to rescue each and every turtle I can from perilous positions on the pavement and I have been known to capture them by placing them in the bed of my pickup truck and then releasing them into my yard upon my return from where ever I have found myself going that day.

Like amphibians, I provide reptiles with both space and quarter from those who might hurt them or worse because they're malicious, in a hurry, or simply don't care.

I wasn't always this way.
