It's World Lion Day. It is held each August 10 since 2013 in an effort to raise awareness of what lions have to go through in a world run by people. They are suffering diminishing numbers as each year passes by. Panthero Leo is an apex predator and they are well known and popular as zoo specimens. Lions are the subject of fear and admiration by we people who could easily wind up dinner.
World Lion Day is held under the auspices of Dereck and Beverly Joubert, and their partnership with National Geographic called the "Big Cat Initiative" of 2009. They who are big cat preservationists alarmed by their diminishing populations falling victim to both poaching and hunting.
I recall the day I thought I was on the menu at the local Riverbanks Zoo.
I was wearing a large warm tan down filled full length coat. I must have struck a pose reminiscent of some wildebeest to the cats because as soon as the lionesses caught a glimpse of me there was a spate of very loud roaring by three or four of them directed toward me. My friends Grady and Dewitt thought it all pretty hilarious but I for sure was not amused.
Happy World Lion Day and I hope you save the rest of them.
