World Hypertension Day 2021

hypertension
I have high blood pressure. "Hypertension" as it is known in medical circles is one of those silent killers which may or may not provide much in the way of symptoms until it is late in the stage of it's progression.

I also have 'metabolic syndrome' which is another name for adult onset diabetes. This further complicates the risks that hyertension may impose.

Today is World Hypertension Day.

The day is held each May 17 under the auspices of The World Hypertension League which incoporates 85 national hypertension organizations. The observance was first held in 2005. The day is meant to increase the awareness of hypertension in light of the lack of appropriate medical education among hypertensive patients.

The recommended blood pressure readings are less than 140/90 mmHg for the general populace.

When in the presence of diabetes or kidney diease, the recommend readings are 130/80 mmHg.

The day also touts the taking of blood pressure readings at home and having a grasp of what your numbers are from the standpoint of personal awareness.

Knowledge is power.
