When I was in the Navy I cultivated a taste for alcohol then drank a fair amount. When I entered I couldn't drink a single beer. When I reached my end of service I could turn them up one after another.
It seems that the Enlisted Mens Club on base was a good place for low cost doubles of Screwdrivers and Gin and Tonics.
Whereas I began as primarily a Screwdriver drinker briefly I gravitated towards Gin and Tonic as what I perceived to be a more "manly" alternative.

Suffice it to say that the Gin mixed drink has dominated my long gone barfly days and in retrospect I view it as a superior choice.
While I no longer imbibe since the early 1990s, my memories of Gin remain favorable as I never suffered a hangover in my entire life.
I attribute this to being my father's son. He too had a high tolerance for alcohol. Though he could drink with the best of them I never saw him appearing "drunk" in his lifetime.
