In my younger days I had a number of pets. I must say that the care they received was not really adequate and they were more toys than anything else.
In my later years I became somewhat better at pet ownership. Only now do I feel fully qualified to own a companion animal.
I feel this is primarily a function of maturity, cultivation of empathy and awareness, and perhaps most of all a sense of responsibility.
Another World Animal Day is upon us. It's the international day for action on the items of animal rights and welfare. Each October 4 this observance marks the feast of Francis of Assisi who is the patron saint of animals.
The aim of the day is recognize animals as the beneficial world denizens they are — and to increase the status of animals everywhere.
It is a culmination of animal welfare proponents and their efforts to make the world better for all animals crossing ethnic, religious, geopolitical, and ideological boundaries.
