On August 23, 1305 Scottish leader Sir William Wallace was executed at Smithfield in London by order of King Edward I.
Convicted of high treason against the English crown, he suffered the brutal medieval punishment of being hanged, drawn, and quartered as a public warning.
Captured near Glasgow in August 1305 by English forces.
Tried and condemned at Westminster Hall on August 23, 1305.
William Wallace denied the charge of treason, stating he never swore allegiance to King Edward.
His gruesome death sentence consisted of being strangled by hanging, disemboweled while still alive, beheaded, and cut into four parts which were subsequently placed on display at the four corners of the realm as a warning.
