Back in my youth I was a big wrestling fan. I would spend time at the home of Ricky Gleaton's parents in Perry SC watching wrestling with Ricky and his father Mortimo. Sometimes we would get pretty raucous at the antics which were said to be "theatrical" at that time. However, it was a release and I remember those many days very fondly.
During the wrestling years there came a performer named Terry Gene Bollea who was better known as "Hulk Hogan" who became a notable American professional wrestler.
Terry Gene Bollea was born August 11, 1953 and passed tragically on July 24, 2025.
He was an effective media personality and widely considered one of the greatest and most recognized wrestlers of all time.
Hulk Hogan won multiple championships worldwide, most notably being a six-time WWF/WWE Champion. He is best known for his work in the World Wrestling Federation which was then known as the WWF but is now called the WWE as well as the World Championship Wrestling, known as the WCW.
He also was a competitor in promotions such as Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, the American Wrestling Association, and New Japan Pro-Wrestling. He underwent a four-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion operation during which his phrenic nerve which controls the diaphragm. He began a noticable and rapid decline in health following this neck fusion surgery.
Hulk Hogan died at his Clearwater, Florida, home on the morning of July 24, 2025, at the age of 71. He collapsed while doing therapy after returning home from the hospital and was transported by paramedics to Morton Plant Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:17 am.
His official cause of death was acute myocardial infarction which is in essence a heart attack. His medical records later revealed he had also had chronic lymphocytic leukemia and atrial fibrillation. In June 2026, a report of an investigation into Hogan's death by the Clearwater Police Department was released where it was determined that he died of natural causes and that his health had been very poor since he had a spinal fusion surgery on his neck approximately six weeks before his death. He was cremated.
