sovereign internet is both censorship and protection

I was on Drudge today and a tidbit caught my eye ...

President Vladimir Putin igned into law a "sovereign internet" bill today allowing the Russians to isolate the country's internet segment. The law states that it comes into effect in November.

Now the people declaring themselves as various "rights" groups are whining loudly and vigorously and if I know Putin, it will not faze him or those who implemented this austere possibility for their citizens.

    censorship protecting you from reality
This is all done in the name of security of Russians online and the broad wording of the bill has some screaming censorship ... which in light of that security I recognize is likewise quite apt.

If I required protection from some jerk wad exploiter as always seems to be hitting my assets I would want just such protection.

However, I have multiple avenues at my disposal which some do not have. My most valuable assets can only be reached through a tunnel.

They tout the typical methodologies for selective routing and though such controversial laws generate a lot of consternation IMHO if Mr Putin can stand the heat from his consitituents this is not an entirely bad development. Your friends at google and microsoft and yahoo as well as MANY ISPs would just as soon feed to you the wolves mouthful after mouthful.

There are other aspects such as those facilitating the ongoing Kremlin clampdown on media and internet freedoms which results in jail time for simply sharing a meme. I am not a proponent of censorship. I am a proponent of protection. I'm okay with selective routing and practice it with a vigorous evolving firewall which sometimes gains a life of it's own.

I am nobody's tool and nobody's fool.
