It is an annual observance each January 10th in celebration of eagles and is meant to raise awareness about these birds, highlighting conservation and making known the on going threats such as habitat loss, active poaching, and pesticide misuse. It encourages learning and appreciation for these magnificent birds of prey.
It once encompassed only the bald and golden eagles found in North America. Now it includes the 60 or so species found internationally.
The day originated with a focus on local bald eagles in Ridgefield Park, NJ, but now promotes protecting all eagle species worldwide.
