Remembering Stan Lee

When I was a child I was a comic book fan. We used to sit around for hours on end reading boxes full.

There was always time to imagine myself some fantastic character beyond human capability like one of the X-Men or the Hulk ... and believe me those daydreams were fairly frequent and quite lengthy.

When I think of all the vintage comic book titles which have passed through my hands it's just another reason to rue the fact that I was unable to keep anything from my past. Some of those titles would be exceedingly valuable at this point in time.

I recall episodes of the Big Bang Theory where the boys were pursuant of various pop culture icons including comic books. Never having viewed them as an "investment" so much as immediate entertainment ... the thought of keeping various books sealed in plastic and stored in safety deposit boxes escapes me to this day.

In the world of comics and media arts there was Stanley Martin Lieber, aka Stan Lee. His collaborators are many and some of my most favorite artists whom I have followed over the years as well — but the man himself is set apart for that which he gave to the worlds of comic books, science fiction, cinema, and television. Few have distiguished themselves to the degree of Stan Lee. His cameos were typically hilarious regardless of where they were encountered.

My lack of vision for the genre never fazed my respect for Stan Lee and his cohorts because what they produced was always valuable in my eyes.

Having passed last year at the ripe old age of 95 he left a mark on the world that will stand on it's own merits for generations to come.

Rest in peace.
