Pat Tillman was born on November 6, 1976 at Fremont, California.
He was a football player inspired to join the Army after the September 11, 2001 attacks.
In 2004 he was serving in Afghanistan following a stint in Iraq. In April of that year, it was falsely reported that Afghan insurgents killed him in battle.
In May, The Pentagon came clean by notifying his parents that he had been killed by friendly fire.
Pat Tillman was killed April 22, 2004 at age 27 in Spera, Khost Province, Afghanistan. There was no evidence for enemy fire at his position.
This travesty of war caused understandable hard feelings between his family and the Department of Defense.
Patrick Daniel Tillman Jr was and remains a hero of the United States of America.
