I was once a steady customer of Piggly Wiggly. Then they thrust their rude Irmo location on me and it was over. I even declined a birthday celebration in my honor when I was teaching college and the foods and drinks came from there.
My grandmother Sallie loved the place. She would want to go to the location on Augusta Road called "Lown Town" run by two area brothers who were twins.
Suffice it to say that she was taken there whenever she wanted.
Piggly Wiggly — which is an LLC — is an American supermarket chain operating in the American South and elsewhere.
Their first store opened in 1916 in Memphis, Tennessee, and is notable as the first true-service grocery store, and the originator of various familiar supermarket features, such as checkout stands and individual item price marking.
The company is presently headed out of Keene, New Hampshire but there are no active stores there.
There were some 503 independently owned Piggly Wiggly stores operated in 18 states as of 2024, primarily in smaller cities and towns. The few I know of are not places I could ever frequent.
It would appear that I am no longer the fan I was prior to the Irmo, South Carolina rude ass Piggly Wiggly encounter of my old college teaching days.
