Perihelion Day 2025

perihelion representation
In this context perihelion is used to refer to that point in the orbit of the Earth placing it closest to the sun. The opposite position is called aphelion.

Perihelion Day is on January 4 this year.

It goes down about 2 weeks after each December Solstice with the Earth’s center at approximately 91,402,500 miles from the sun’s center.

There are calculations devised to predict perihelion passage. On this day, the solar chomosphere typically appears at its largest.

It is quite interesting to see what goes on in the universe and the planet on which we live. Perihelion is one of those many interesting occurrences. While I view it all as interesting astronomical curiosa it does not rule my existence as it did in pagan times. Enjoy this day of solar proximity.
