I didn't really "choose" it. It chose me. Nonetheless, "The Navy" is, of course, "The Navy" and I was repeatedly told that they did not differentiate between "reserve" or otherwise. The only real distinction is "active duty" or not.
My recruiter placed me there under his authority and the bottom line was I was in the Reserve and that was that.
I would soon find out that it was all one Navy and the "reserve" designation really didn't mean a lot outside of the service contract parameters.
Today is the Naval Reserve Birthday.
It is celebrated annually on March 3 to commemorate the establishment of the United States Navy Reserve.
The last time I celebrated Navy birthdays I was aboard the USS MacDonough (DDG-39) with then FTC Wayne Mead ... who was Navy to the core. He was a true friend and passed recently and I continue grieving.
On Congress passed legislation to establish the Federal Navy Reserve on March 3, 1915. It was renamed the US Naval Reserve Force on April 6, 1917. The Naval Reserve Force was renamed to Navy Reserve in 2005.
