Today is National South Carolina Day. I only learned of this day a couple of days back. Having lived here for in excess of 60 years I find that a rather dubious claim to fame on my part.
Aside from the fact that I don't know the subtle nuances of my state — likely due to a lack of personal interest cultivated over the years and I am apalled that my impetus simply wasn't there.
Boo.
So the day is supposedly about our "unique" landscapes, historical background, and individuals associated with our progression through the years. The native Americans of the region are the Catawbas and Cherokee tribes. Those battles fought in the revolutionary and civil wars left war dead and lingering attitudes. Our social profile remains beyond my grasp as I do not indulge most of the cultural aspects of the state.
Regardless I hope you have a happy National South Carolina Day and enjoy much more of our state than I regularly do.
People wonder why my enthusiasm wanes for my country and state in the presence of all that patriotism I display otherwise. I personally view South Carolina and the United States of America as lands of interlopers and foreign invaders from places like Mexico, South America, India, and South Dakota taking jobs from the native persons of the United States and South Carolina in particular — who simply stand by and let it happen.
