National Orchid Day 2024

I like orchids. I like the delicate flowers suspended from long stems and the leave tufts at the bottom. Take a pot,
| • add really good rich soil of varying consistencies based on the variety of orchid, |
| • adequate sunlight — but not too much, |
| • keep them close to 65-75° during the day and 55-65° at night |
| • feed quarter strength 20-10-20 fertilizer and |
| • water them weekly, sometimes with ice cubes |
| • in a room with a humidity of 50-75% |
| • Note that the different species have varying requirements. |
This is how we did it at my job with the incorporated municipality.
Today is National Orchid Day. It is observed on April 16 each year. The day is associated with honoring the memory of our loved ones and others dear to our hearts.
The day originates here in South Carolina in 2015 under the auspices of a couple, Mike and Faith Young who lost a daughter whom they had decided to name 'Orchid' the previous year. Such a sad tale regarding the day for such a beautiful flower.
Anyway, when you see those orchids in the stores wrapped in cellophane you might nab one or a few and give it a shot at growing them. If you give them adequate attention and stroke their leaves you may find yourself surrounded in tropical beauty.
