A necktie is a strip of material worn around the collar and tied in a knot at the front with the ends hanging down; aka tie.
These accessories have been around since about 1838 and I once viewed them as the bane of my existence. During my career I amassed a large collection of various ties which I wore each day as a symbol of professional involvement.
In the late years of my career I noticed the younger set simply left them out of the equation and I really didn't care one way or another.
The image you project is a function of your environment.
I hated my job because everybody thought they had the right to interrupt my projects to work on theirs and these bad feelings remain to this day.
However, I always tried to place my best foot forward and to me it included one of many neckties I maintained for just such occasions.
I bet my replacement didn't have to continually be anybody's bitch.
Today is National Necktie Day, aka International Tie Day aka World Tie Day.
It is observed each October 18 to honor the history, cultural significance, and evolution of the necktie.
I never saw myself as a fashionista or even an overly neat dresser.
However I did the best I could and some of my Christmas ties became the stuff of legend in the office.
