Indeed, the rudiments of that time cannot be fairly compared to what is going on nowadays but history records each tiny step we took toward the giant leap we enjoy now.
The internet has been overrun with people who think paywalls are the way to generate their revenue. Nothing makes it to my firewall quicker than a paywall.
Then there are the ancillary things like streaming video and such that add to the experience.
All-in-all I doubt very much that it will ever all "be free" again and indeed there are jurisdictions seeking to control even the flow of information across their networks.
Today is National Internet Day. Some call it International Innternet Day. It falls on October 29 and give us pause to consider from where we have come and to where we are going.
Tim Berners Lee is credited with it's invention. He was not the only one involved but indeed about as key a figure in it's development as they get.
I hope you'll take a moment to consider a small modicum of appreciation. Too often we take things for granted that shouldn't be.
