My younger days found me in the presence of many horses. I never owned one but it seems that everyone around me did.
My cousin Regina was quite the accomplished equestrian as I remember. These were the days in my life when I found rodeo events entertaining. I recall a fondness for some of those steeds which eclipsed that fondness I felt for their owners ...
Over the years I have had a soft spot for horses. I had a friend back in my young adulthood who was a horse fanatic as it were.
She maintained a collection of a hundred or so extremely realistic models of horses in various poses and I recall my first encounter with this collection as being one of those speechless moments when I found words to be simply inadequate.
Unfortunately she and I have gone our separate ways so I guess I'll never see them again.
Today is National Horse Protection Day. It is held each March 1 in an effort to end the suffering of horses everywhere.
Unfortunately I have also seen a lot of horses which were not treated well — beaten, starved, left out in the cold.
This day brings to light such cruelty against animals in the form of neglect and abuse.
National Horse Protection Day began in 2005 under the auspices of one Colleen Paige. She is an expert on pets, animal behavior and a lover of the equine species.
Though her efforts have aided the cause for abolishing cruelty toward horses there remains a long way to go.
