Along with my holiday season I try to squeeze in a few slices of fruitcake. It's been this way for as long as I can remember. A hallmark of the season for the past 20 years or so is me sitting with a cup of hot coffee and a big piece of various varieties of fruitcake.
I have fond memories of the Claxton fruitcakes which were a favorite of my late Grandma Sallie. I would typically store it in the fridge and cut pieces from it as desired. Every time I taste a piece of one I think of her.
Ah, the satisfaction of it all as I bask in the spirit of the holidays with one of my favorite holiday flavors ...
Today is National Fruitcake Day. It goes down each December 27 annually and is a day set aside for appreciation of the eccentric as well as a time to enjoy a variety of fine holiday baked goods.
Anyway I like fruitcake during the holiday season. I could sit there and extol the virtues of the moist heavy ingredients laden confection on and on.
I like all varieties, dark, light, a lot of fruit and nuts, mostly cake, drizzled with brandy or not, and the possibilities are endless according to your ethnicity and holiday traditions.
Happy National Fruitcake Day !
