Intolerance is not a bragging right. We should make accommodations for family members who transgress our feelings regardless of how important we feel those circumstances are.
For example, I have been a stalwart opponent of homosexuality. My protests against the gay lifestyle are the stuff of legend. Well, now I have learned I have a gay relative. Am I to reject this person solely on my opinion of their sexuality and lifestyle or do I set it aside for purposes of family harmony and good will.
Well, after pondering the notion extensively I have decided this person in particular represents a faction for which I should set aside my objections in the name of peace and harmony. In the name of family.
I met this person and felt it immoral to reject them over something they ostensibly didn't pick for themselves nor can control.
Oh the travesty of hipocracy this brings to mind. Be all of it as it may I am going to lighten up now because this is not a man claiming to be a woman or a woman claiming to be a man. It is someone attracted to someone of his same gender.
Life is about getting past things. I will now overlook homosexuality as a trigger item in my life on the behalf of this relative who is a quiet reserved person deserving of my accommodation. Transgenders WILL NOT be so lucky in my presence. Better give me very wide berth or be well armed.
Today is National Family Civility Day.
It happens each November 15th annually in the name of celbrating all types of families who are civil to and support each other.
It began as a notion of Dr Rebecca Harper of the Family Civility Institute in 2019 and recognizes nuclear families, blended families, families with disabilities, childless families, and chosen families such as friends or significant others.
I feel this encompasses sexual orientation as well and as such I'm stepping back from my severe criticisms because my relative impressed me with the fact that is it most certainly warranted.
Such is my life. Monitor and adjust. I have encountered reason for an exception to my attitudes and have made it.
