I have a number of cousins which I have invariably taken for granted over the years. Then one day I started losing them and only then did I experience retrospect and regrets for not spending more time with them.
Of the cosusins I have lost most notable is John Michael Holladay Sr who was in Astor, Florida when he passed from the sequela of smoking. It was all very sad because I feel that he had found his 'soul mate' who was Rose Frazier Holladay and they were very happy in their lives in that almost bayou appearing area of Lake County, Florida with all the nature and such it had to offer.
Then there was my absolute favorite cousin, Greg Gore from Mississippi. He was the funniest human being on the planet as far as I was concered and whenever I was around him I gafawed at his stories and how he stated certain elements of existence known to me. Some one that funny and with that wealth of social awareness regarding his surroundings should have lived forever.
Today is National Cousins Day.
It is observed each July 24.
It is an unofficial holiday dedicated to recognizing the lifelong friendships and unique bonds shared with cousins who often serve as our first childhood friends, playmates, and confidants.
Indeed some of my cousins were the very first people I interacted with as a young child. I miss so many of their extended families as well because I was closest to them over the years. anyway, I would have wished to be a better cousin had I known then what I know now. You never know how bad you're going to miss people until you lose them.
So days like National Cousins Day give me a momment to take pause and remember and wistfully wish for days gone by.
Remember your cousins. Remember your aunts, uncles, and signficant others because you won't have them forever.
