National Bow Tie Day 2026

I prefer the long thin necktie because I think bow ties render a "queer" look to the wearer. Perhaps the day I saw my hick cousin decked out in a tacky corduroy tux for his high school prom I was triggered initially.
All I know is the more conservative the look the more I like it. My disdain could also be due to the dweeb health instructor at Horace O'Bryant Junior High in Key West, Florida who always wore a bow tie and that lasting impression he left with me as well. I suppose we'll never really know, but suffice it to say I have not worn many bow ties over the years and never plan to don another.
I guess there may be no 'black tie' affairs for me in the future.
Today is National Bow Tie Day.
It is celebreated each August 28.
The day is meant to honor the history, style, and distinct charm of the bow tie. Only there are none of those things associated with it in my mind.
The style goes back to the 17th century Croatian mercenaries during the Prussian wars, where early versions were known as cravats. As appealing as this is I still hate the accessory.
Just because I think they are fashion faux pas you may certainly wear anything you deem appropriate to that look you're going for. I don't hold the wearing of a bow tie against anyone and I'll try to keep the cat calls and mockery down to a dull roar.
