Haven't ever been a bird guy. I have a good friend who is. He rescued an Amazon parrot a long time back and they have since become fast friends.
I can think of a lot of tragic outcomes which could have befallen this animal had the kindness of my friend John not intervened. I suppose there are higher powers at work which enabled those good fortunes such as becoming the ward of John to befall Pepper.
It has really been an amazing and interesting tale over the years I've known him.
Today is National Bird Day which happens annually on January 5.
The 'original' Bird Day was established by Charles Almanzo Babcock, the Oil City, Pennsylvania superintendent of schools in 1894.
It was the first holiday in the United States dedicated to the celebration of birds.
Babcock intended it to advance bird conservation as a moral value. Everybody wants to believe they assume the moral high ground.
National Bird Day is a sort of 'spin off' becoming an annual holiday with half a million adherents who celebrate through birdwatching, studying birds, and other bird-related activities.
The adoption of birds is a particularly important National Bird Day activity.
It has been said in news outlets that many bird enthusiasts celebrate by adopting birds and by educating future bird owners about the special issues involved with taking care of birds which are many and varied.
The Avian Welfare Coalition's National Bird Day campaign aims to improve the welfare of parrots and other birds with the discouragement of purchasing them as pets, and the support of of wild bird habitat conservation programs along with captive bird rescue organizations and sanctuaries.
