Michaelmas 2022

My Christianity has held many tenets regarding angels. They are "messenger" spiritual being believed to act as an attendant or agent of God. They are represented in human form with wings and a long robe in popular illustration but just because they fly doesn't mean they actually have wings. Archangels are angels of high rank.

Aside from God, Christ, his mother Mary, or Joseph his stepfather I would like to meet Saint Michael most of all. Michael is an archangel. He is that angel God calls upon when the situation calls for action and battle.

Michael the Archangel arrives for battle

This archangel Michael aka Saint Michael the Archangel, Saint Michael the Taxiarch and Archangel Michael is the archangel of Judaism, Christianity, Islam and the Baha'i faith. His earliest mention appears in 3rd and 2nd century BC Jewish works. They are often but not always apocalyptic, meaning world ending. He is the chief of the angels and archangels and responsible for the care of Israel. Christianity adopted nearly all the Jewish traditions concerning him. He is mentioned explicitly in Revelation 12:7–12 where he does battle with Satan and in the Epistle of Jude, where heretics are denounced by contrasting them with Michael.

Michaelmas aka the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, the Feast of the Archangels, or the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels is a Christian observance in some Western liturgical calendars on September 29. In Christian angelology, the Archangel Michael is the greatest of all the angels and is honored for defeating Lucifer in the war in heaven.

Revelation

12:7And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
12:8And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
12:9And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
12:10And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
12:11And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
12:12Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

Jude

1:1Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:
1:2Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied.
1:3Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
1:4For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.
1:5I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.
1:6And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
1:7Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
1:8Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.
1:9Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
1:10But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves.
1:11Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.
1:12These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;
1:13Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.
1:14And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
1:15To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
1:16These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage.
1:17But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;
1:18How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.
1:19These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.
1:20But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,
1:21Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
1:22And of some have compassion, making a difference:
1:23And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
1:24Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,
1:25To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.
