Man in the Wilderness

I was reading in the Chicago Tribune regarding a man who rented a car through Renault Eurodrive. The automobile GPS did not have updated maps for countries other than Italy. While travelling the Balkans the man got lost and was unable to obtain sufficient directions to find his hotel. Now he's mad and wants a discount on that sizable payment he makes due to his embarassment and incovenience.

automotive GPS

This brings me to the entire concept of automotive GPS installations sold with vehicles today. Though likely a non issue in the USA I would never deem purchase of a GPS as an essential item in any automotive package.

I have driven all over the country without a GPS and was never lost a single time. This spans those metropolitan areas including Boston, New York City, and points South through the Delmarva peninsula as well as the Los Angeles megalopolis and numerous points in between.

I don't know to what I may attribute this innate "sense of direction" for unlike Daniel Boone — who claimed never to have been lost; but merely "bewildered" for three days ... I too have never been "lost" per se.

My context being that LOST is relative to how much fuel is in the tank or may be purchased and that as long as I can reach a major thoroughfare I can reach any destination with a minimum of hubub just knowing North, South, East, and West.
