International Watermelon Day 2026

So watermelon was a big part of my childhood. We would ride to the fields on the wooden tractor drawn trailer and load it up with melons til we thought it might burst. Then we would go to the fence of the cow and pig field which at that time was covered in deep swaths of hay.

We would cut the ripe melon, eating the hearts and discarding the rest for the farm animals. I would leave these events simply gorged with the ripe melon.

Later I would realize that this was a time in my life when all truths were not made known to me and so it was an otherwise happy time. Ignorance is bliss. Such a shame it didn't last.

Today is International Watermelon Day aka National Watermelon Day.

It happens each August 3 and is another one of those fun food holiday whereby we eat, share, and enjoy the juicy, refreshing summer fruit.

Watermelon is a sweet and cool snack for hot summer weather.
The fruit is made of 92% water so it is an excellent source of hydration.
Watermelon has solids which contain vitamins like Vitamin C and Vitamin A.

I was always told that those 8% of solids in the fruit were the active ingredient in those health benefits.

We have grown and eaten watermelons for nearly 5000 years. It all began in ancient Egypt. The watermelons are part of the Cucurbitaceae family, making them cousins to cucumbers, pumpkins, and squash. If you've ever partaken on both cucumbers and watermelon together you can visualize their similarities. The entirety of the watermelon, including the rind is edible and may be consumed if it has been pickled or cooked.

So tomorrow I will go fetch a melon or two for mother and I to enjoy.

I recommend that you do the same should you be so inclined.
