I haven't been on a picnic for as long as I can remember. There were times when I would go and attend these fetes of food and merriment and engage the day and people all day long.
Today is International Picnic Day.
We observe it each year on June 18th.
It is an international observance encouraging people to step outdoors, enjoy the warm weather, and share a meal in the beauty of nature.
The word picnic originates in the 17th-century French term piquenique. This is also combined with piquer (which means to pick or peck) and nique (a small thing).
Originally, it referred to social gatherings where each person brought a dish to share. These still occur in those groups within which I circulate periodically.
The feast dates back to Ancient Greece and Medieval hunting parties.
The modern thing we know as a "picnic" became in vogue sometime after the French Revolution, when royal parks were finally opened to the public.
The people of the Victorian era are deemed most responsible.
So gather portable snacks, fruits, and drinks and head to a local park or your own backyard.
