I live close to the local fire station on 12th Street and make the effort to cooperate and surrender the right of way in the presence of these first responders.
I have known of several fire fighters who went down really hard doing this essential job.
Today is National Firefighters Day.
We honor those who protect us from the ravages of fires in the concrete jungle.
The day is held on May 4th because it's also Saint Florian's Day. Saint Florian is believed to be one of the first commending firefighters of a Roman battalion and is the patron saint of firefighters.
I don't know much about fire fighting because when I left the Navy it ceased being a duty I practiced daily. Communication, coordination, and control are the three Cs that represent the firefighting principles of successful ventilation.
The Golden Rule of Fire Safety is "Get Out, Stay Out, and Call for Help".
Fire safety is paramount in every environment, especially in buildings where the risk of fire can be high due to electrical systems, heating, and cooking equipment.
I honor the fire fighter and will render assistance to them if possible — or at least get out of their way.
