Ah, the chicken wing. All my life I have enjoyed this particular piece of the bird. I recall it being my preference at the dinner table from childhood through the mass quantities I consumed at various wing joints all over. This being said, not all chicken wings are created equal.
I once went to a place called Wingstop a block or so from my home. The taste was rancid and I learned later that all they do are "frozen precooked wings" and this in itself is quite self limiting and disqualifying.
Then I want to a place called Tasty Wings and Seafood another block farther. They served me extremely mediocre wings in a container filled with liquid. This too was disqualifying and I never returned.
Zaxby's — across the street from Wingstop — makes a half way decent wing and I have been known to order them from time to time.
The chinese joint Number 1 China next to Tasty Wings and Seafood used to be my favorite. However, my last order prepared under the new management regime was decidedly dry and lacking, as if it were entirely too old to be served to a valued customer so I don't know if I'll ever eat their wings again either.
Suffice it to say, the world of chicken wing consumers is quite fickle with one false move and it's over. I even bought a gas range with a built in air fryer as a contingency.
I would like to point out that my current favorite establishment servinng chicken wings is Wild Wing Cafe on Lady at Gadsden Street in Columbia SC ... although I must confess that I haven't dined there since I departed my employment with the city. I once frequented their lunch buffet until they closed it one sad day. I returned when they reopened it.
Regardless I continue to pine for those ever so crispy wings frequently.
Today is International Chicken Wing Day. It is observed on July 1 annually. The day is about eating chicken wings. All kinds of wings.
The first International Chicken Wing Day was declared in 1977 by one Stan Makowski, the former mayor of Buffalo.
Happy International Chicken Wing Day. Go forth and scarf down a couple dozen for me !
