I ended up buying the Digital Equipment Corporation Robin, which was a VT-100 terminal equipped with a new main board and disk drive running CPM instead of MS-DOS.
Now this wasn't so bad in practice but the time frame did leave me with a feeling of contempt for IBM, Microsoft, and the whole of the personal computer business for a long time.
There has been a lot of water under the bridge since then and I have several clones in service as servers and workstations around the crib at this very moment.
I remember my old Microsoft aficionado days and that accompanying petulance I engaged for Apple products. Now, here in my old age I feel it was all meaningless because I found own path along the way and had a sufficient career spanning some 40 years — keeping clear of the Microsoft mess and concentrating on the CGI and fourth generational languages which were plentiful and interesting.
If I could go back and change my approach I likely would. I just grew tired of the stupid Microsoft contingent of sycophant boot licking sub genius mentality in the field who really didn't know much of anything except complimenting google in the most empty ways possible as though their opinions really mattered.
Today marks the 1981 release of the first IBM Personal Computer. I worked on them long before I owned one.
Model 5150 with the Intel 8088 processor wasn't all that, but became the "industry standard" and thereby was an item I coveted. Just think it ran at 4.77 MHz on PC-DOS 1.0. It just made my life suck at that tender young stage of my evolution.
I am much more evolved that I was then and I buy what I need and I also am sorry there has been no room for Apple products in the mix. I think that my collection is lacking somewhat over that minute detail.
So as I bask in the memories I realize that many of you weren't even around back then.
