During my childhood and youth there was Amy Vanderbilt. She was known for her writing. I knew her from various television spots and interviews I encountered occasionally. She was published in various areas and was said to be an expert on manners, decorum, and other affairs indigeneous to that socialite lifestyle she lead.
Amy Osborne Vanderbilt was born on Staten Island July 22, 1908. She was the daughter of Joseph Mortimer Vanderbilt who was an insurance broker and Mary Estelle Brooks Vanderbilt. She began work as a part time reporter for the Staten Island Advance when she was 16 while attending high school.
She was educated in Switzerland and the Packer Collegiate Institute of Brooklyn prior to attending New York University. She worked in advertising and public relations, and was published after five years of research.
She hosted television from 1954 through 1960 and did radio as well. She also did consulting for various organizations including the State Department of the United States.
Amy Vanderbilt passed on December 27, 1974 from multiple skull fractures attributed to either a fall or jump from a second floor window of her residence. She is interred in Brooklyn at the Cemetery of the Evergreens.
